William enlisted October 25, 1864 at Richmond, Indiana as a Private and was with Company K 38 Regiment Indiana Infantry. He was discharged at Louisville, Kentucky on July 25, 1865. From his Civil War records it states, 'It is also alleged that while on duty in Nashville, Tennessee he was disabled by disease of lungs and nervous affection . . no medical treatment'. In later years, William was crippled in his legs, actual cause unknown. For many years his legs were crossed making it impossible for him to walk. He used a case and crutch so he could scoot along.
