George Henry McBride - Private
My great great grandfather, George Henry McBride, served with Co. C 14th Indiana Infantry and Co.D 21st Indiana Infantry. Enlisted 7 June 1861, discharged 12 July 1865. Was at Gettysburg 1-3 July 1863. When the battle was over he stood up, looked around and said as far as he could see, there was nothing but dead men. He attended the 50th reunion of his company at the battlefield in 1913 and said it was much the same as when he was there. He served under John Reynolds who was killed the 3 July 1863.

John H. Wingert - Sergeant
John was wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 13th 1862 while his unit was charging the stonewall at Marye's heights. he was carrying the colors of his unit. He died of his wounds four days later. He's probably buried in the National Cemetery on the heights. He enlisted in June 1861 in Evansville and fought with the unit until his death. there are many unknowns during the civil war due to not using identification tags or 'dog tags' as in later US military eras. He is mentioned in Nancy Niblack Baxter's book Gallant Fourteenth in the chapter concerning the unit's part at fredericksburg. Wingert and Wingerter are German names and mean the same thing i.e. vinyard worker or inhabitant of an area near a vinyard. Some of the family shortened or lengthened the name accordingly.
