I was trying to research our family tree and I came upon this web site. My great grandfather was a member of Company D of the 153rd Indiana Infantry from Feb 16 to Sept 14 in 1865. He fought under the commmand of Captain Joseph Sugars. If anyone has information regarding this, please e-mail me.
Thank you,
Jim Rennaker

John R. Salter - Private |
Mustered at Indianopolis Jan. 1865 - Marched to Taylor Barracks. Deserted August 1865 prior to marching to Russellville KY. Contracted Piles disease while at Taylor Barracks. John was in and out of the Army hospital for 3 months prior to returning home to Indiana. Died Oct. 1867 from complications. I believe John Salter had dysentery, and was misdiagnosed as having Piles Disease. The charge of disertion was removed and his widow Louisa Emaline received a pension beginning 1887 and continued until her death in 1914.
