John R. Harvey was 18 years old when signed up for a 6 months enlistment in Lafayette, Ind on August 7, 1863. He was mustered out on March 1, 1864. The 116th Ind Inf served in Tennessee and John Harvey later claimed a disability caused by crossing the Tennesse River in December, 1863. He Married Mary Mort of Illinois, had children and sometime in the 1880-90 timeframe moved to Red River County, TX. Where he died and is buried.

In 1863 he raised company G, One Hundred and Sixteenth Indiana Volunteer Infantry,being elected and commissioned captain when the company was organized. Later he was made major-surgeon of the brigade. He acted as surgeon at the battles of Blue Springs and Walker's Ford.
