Abram Plunkett - Private |
Ambrose Remley's letters to his parents were used as the basis for the Richard Baumgartner's 'Blue Lightning - Wilder's Mounted Infantry Brigade.' My great grandfather, Abram Plunkett (born in Greencastle, IN Putnam County) was a member of Wilder's Lightning Brigade from it's formation to mustering out. On page 44 of Blue Lightning, 'I am seated in my new shelter tent,' wrote the 72 Indiana's Ambrose Remley who 'bunked' with Private Abram Plunkett of Company E.
Plunkett taught himself how to read since his father, William, was not open to formal schooling. Abram read and studied the Bible all during the war and when he was
mustered out chose to attend the Ladoga Normal School in Ladoga, IN where he studied for the ministry and pastored many Christian Churches from Vevay to New Ross and Crawfordsville. Family called him a 'circuit ridin' preacher.' We do not have a record of his pastorates or none of his Civil War memorabilia. His second wife, Louisa Martin (Cousin of Bob Lafollette, Sen. Wisconsin), was estranged from the Plunkett family and kept all Abram's equipment etc, including his sword.
