Merideth served as a teenager, having been born in March of 1848, during Sherman's March to the Sea. He acknowledged that their task was that of pontooniers, and that he was, during the winter of '64-'65 an Orderly to Col. Joseph Moore. He spent considerable time in the swampy water in southern Georgia and South Carolina as his unit built bridges for the Union army to cross.

Mathew Swan - Private |
Per National Archives Civil War records, Mathew mustered in at Princeton, IN, on Dec. 16, 1861. These records show he was wounded on Nov. 24, 1863. He was still listed as in the hospital through April of 1864, then as 'sick,' and then in the hospital, first in Evansville, then Indianapolis. Per Widow's Pension case # 208.640, he was discharged December 15, 1864, filed an invalid application on March 2, 1874, and died July 23, 1883. Per five physician's certificates found in the Pension Records at the National Archives, Mathew (pension/invalid cert. #130.091) was wounded in the left breast by a musket ball at the Battle of Lookout Mountain in Tennessee on Nov. 24, 1863 (per affidavit filed by George Whitman, late Capt. Co D, 58th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers). Per one examination, performed by G.B. Montgomery, MD, Mathew was wounded in September, 1862. The day of the exam in 1882, Mathew was 5'11' tall, weighed 130 pounds, and had fair complexion. The musket ball was 'behind the left lung' and 'was never extracted.'
