William H. Cuppy - Captain |
Note: I am not a relative of Capt. William H. Cuppy. I have researched the life of his nephew, the humorist Will Cuppy, and believe that Capt. Cuppy's service should be recorded here. I owe most of the details to Margaret Hobson's 'The Iron Men of Indiana's 44th Regiment: Part 1: Biographies and Regimental Statistics,' 2012, p. 77. ISBN 0988948907, 9780988948907
Capt. William H. Cuppy, b. about 1836 in Wayne County, Ind. d. July 15, 1862, in South Whitley, Whitley County, Ind. Enrolled in 44th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Oct. 16, 1861. Mustered in Nov. 22, 1861. Received severe wound in thigh at Ft. Donelson on Feb. 16, 1862. Sent to Henderson, Ky., for surgery, but ball remained in thigh. Returned to regiment May 5, 1862. 'After having partially recovered from the wound and an attack of typhoid fever, expecting a great battle at Corinth, he rejoined his Co., hoping after the engagement to be able to return home and regain his health.' Requested leave Jun. 14, 1862, and reached home on June 24, where he died. A tribute, possibly by his commanding officer, Col. Hugh B. Reed, called him 'a good officer-true and faithful-admired by all the officers of the Regiment and his men.' His mother, Sarah Collins Cuppy, filed Pension Application. Pension Certificate #352180. Burial: South Whitley Cem., South Whitley, Ind., Section W, Row 11, #14. Described as 5 feet, 9.5 inches in height and having dark complexion, dark hair, brown eyes. The G.A.R. post in South Whitley was named for him.
