They were one of the first units to use the Spencer repeating rifle, and consequently were able to perform well against larger units opposing them. Their action at Alexander's bridge at Chickamauga, a perfect example.

Born 1841 Ebenezer mustered into the 98th on 3 Sept 1862 at Dillborough, Iowa, USA. 7 Oct 1863 he was wounded at the Battle of Farmington Tennessee. He Died in Bowling Green, Warren, Kentucky and was buried at the National Cemetery in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee. He left a widow Hanna Jenkins Bostic. He was one of five Bostic brothers that served the Union during the Civil war.
