John lied about as age limit was 45 and he was 46. He was the oldest man in his Rgt. He was wounded at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky. (right arm wound) which caused permanent disability. He had a farm in rural Trivoli, but after his wound, he tried several other vocations, as farming was no longer possible.

John West was my great-grandfather on my fathers side. John mustered in to the 86th Illinois Infantry Company F in August 1862 in Peoria, IL John was captured in Kennasaw, GA and held prisoner at Andersonville for 14 months, and was released in Jacksonville, FL He returned to Illinois and mustered out in May 1865. He lived the remainder of his life in Maquon, IL and is buried there

Jacob Hansel Westerfield - Corporal
|
Jacob H. Westerfield is my Great-Great Grandfather on my mom's mothers side. Born in Oct. 1843 and joined the service Aug 9th, 1862 in Washington, IL and mustered in on Aug 27, 1862 at Camp Lyon in Peoria. While foraging for food in South Carolina he was captured and became a prisoner of war. (unsure where he was held). He was mustered out on Jun 24, 1865 at Springfield. He attended the 25th year reunion of the 86th Illinois infantry held in Peoria on Aug 27, 1887 and died in Mar 1912. He is buried in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Stanford, IL with his wife Nancy.
