G-G-Uncle Robert Dixon was from Coles Co., IL, and enlisted in Co. B, 55th Illinois Inf., on Oct. 31, 1861. He fought with his regiment at Shiloh, the Vicksburg Campaign, and all the battles of the Atlanta Campaign. He was mustered out at the end of his 3 year enlistment in Oct. 1864 at Atlanta, GA. He went back to IL and settled in Montgomery County where he married and raised a family. In 1903 after the death of his brother John (Co. F, 62nd Ill. Inf.) in 1901 and John's wife in 1903, he became the legal guardian of their two children, Rhoda and Robert. He received a small guardian's pension based on John's veteran's pension. Robert also received a veteran's pension.

Enlisted Sept. 22, 1861 at Mendota, IL as a private in Company I, 55th Regiment of Illinois Infantry Volunteers. George was reported fatally wounded May 17, 1862 at the Russell House near Corinth, Miss. The report was somewhat premature since he was medically discharged on Oct. 14, 1862 at St. Louis for a wound in the right shoulder at the base of the scapula, disability one eighth. He was described as 30 years old, 5' 5 3/4' tall, dark complexion, brown eyes, black hair, and occupation: farmer. George re-enlisted Jan. 29, 1864 at Dixon, IL into the same outfit, signing by his mark, 'X'. He was described as living at Mendota, LaSalle Co. IL, age 32 years 10 months, dark eyes, hair, and complexion, and 5' 7' tall. He was mustered out Aug. 14, 1865 at Little Rock, Ark.
