Born in Norway. Lived in Enid, LaSalle County, Ill. Enlisted at the age of 32 for three years on 24 May, 1861 at Dixon, Illinois. Mustered the same day as a Private.. Bounty $100. Promoted to Corporal on 1 Dec. 1863. Discharged from the service by order of Major General Freemont for disability at Rolla, Missour, 23 Sep, 1864.

He was a brother of my Great Grandfather, Edwin Valder, who also served in the Civil War from the state of Illinois.

Written on his discharge paper were the 9 battles he fought in - Chicksaw Bayou 12/24-29/1862; Arkansas Post 1/11/63; Battle of Jackson 5/14/63; Seige of Vicksburg; Jackson, MI 7/10/63; Another Battle on 10/24/63; Battle of Lookout Mountain 11/24/63; Battle of Ringgold Gap 11/24/63 and the Battle of Missionary Ridge 11/25/63.

On June 18, 1864, the Regiment was mustered out at Springfield, Ill., having served three years and two months.
