James Monroe Gunn - Private
James was 22 years old when he joined Co C 61st Regiment Ga Infantry at Bethel Church, Ouitman, Brooks County on 10 Sept. 1861. This unit had several other designations. He is assigned as a butcher in the Commissary Dept. CMR 15 Jan. - 30 April 1864, Remarks: Missing since battle of Maryland Heights. Held as POW at Fort McHenry Md. Swallowed the ' Yellow Dog' on 11 May 1865 and released. James apparently died on the way home, as he never arrived. His family last heard that he was near Atlanta. A little known fact is that the occupying yankee army did little to help the returning CSA soldiers and there are stories that they abused them. The occupying army was a nasty piece of work whose story is still not told. James was the first husband of my Nancy McMullen my 2nd cousin 4 x removed.
