Risdon Daniel Nichols
Risdon Daniel Nichols - 3rd Corporal |
|
I know precious little about my 3rd Great-Grandfather, Risdon Daniel Nichols or his ancestry. I know only that he was killed (or died of other causes) early in his military service in Kentucky in 1862. Since posting this originally, I have found out that he died of illness as a P.O.W. in Lexington, KY on Sept 12, 1862 and is buried in the Confederate Lot at the Lexington Cemetery. Not sure if there will be any more info or a way to find his location, if he is buried in a single grave.
He was married to Amanda Melvina Swinney in GA and had two children, Amanda Melvina and Edward Henry before he enlisted.
Amanda and the children moved to East Texas (Wood/Upshur Co.) after the war where there were other 'Swinney' kinfolk living.
Looking for ways to find out more about Risdon's individual military service history and possible grave location.

A.J. was a married, small-scale farmer in eastern Clayton County, GA with five children when he enlisted. He died of complications from measles in a military hospital in Atlanta on 24 May 1864 after being forced to return to the ranks prematurely. He was convalescing at home on furlough when the Home Guard rounded him up and sent him back to his unit in north Georgia. His 7th and last child was born 4 days after he died, and did not survive infancy. His wife, a part-Indian woman named Nancy Green, suffered 15 years after the war as the single mother of 6 and an exploited sharecropper in south Clayton County before re-marrying and following several of her sons to Texas. Her second daughter was my great-grandmother.
