Vardy Pritchard Sisson - Private |
The book, “A SCYTHE OF FIRE” gives the history of the Eight Georgia Regiment assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia in 1861. My grandfather, Vardy Prichard Sisson, served the entire four years- first as a private with company F of the Atlanta Gray’s and later as a staff office with Tige Anderson’s brigade. He endured battles from Manassas to Appomattox. His Civil War mementos describes his battle involvements, the surrender at Appomattox and riding his horse back home to Athens, Georgia.

He was sent to Chimborazo Hospital in Feb 1863 for treatment of typhus and returned to duty a month later. He later became a POW and was paroled at Appomattox Courthouse. I have his military history and copies of his muster rolls but am looking for any personal information.

Josiah Madry, Jr. - Private |
Josiah entered Confederate service at Rome, Georgia. His records are provided at Film number M232 roll 33, Civil War Soldier & Sailors System (http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/). He was born 1836 in Wake, North Carolina.
Josiah was one of my cousins on my father's paternal side. His sister - my GGrandmother, Mary, married my GGrandfather - Thomas J. Gattis. Other members of the Gattis Family joined the 40th Georgia Infanty Regmt.
The 8th Georgia Regmt sustained 208 casualties at First Manassas (the highest casualties of any regiment in the battle). The Regiment stood and held it's ground in the midst of a major Union attack. At Gettsburg, they led in the center across the Wheat Field, and to the slopes of Little Round Top. A novel entitled 'A Scythe of Fire' was written about his Regiment.
