William Cuzzort - Private |
Last name also spelled (or misspelled) as Cuzzart, Cuzzark, Cazzort, Cozort, Cazzork. From Floyd Co., very near border with Polk Co. William was my great-great-grandfather. His brother Columbus served in the 65th GA Infantry. William is buried at Jackson Chapel, near Cave Spring, GA, and has CW headstone. William's witness (Huckaby) for his pension testified that they both served as part of CSA President Jefferson Davis' escort during Davis 'run' from Richmond to where they were finally captured, Washington, GA. Apparently, William was cavalry escort for an Arkansas outfit, Wiggins' Battery, which surrendered in South Carolina. There, William's remnant of the Georgia 6th Cav was picked up by General Basil Duke and included as part of the roughly 2500-man Davis escort.
