William enlisted on 19 July 1862 at Calhoun, Ga. In Oct. of 1862 he suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand which injured the first two fingers. He was given a 30 day furlough. He applied for an extension on 21 Nov. and it was denied on 2 Dec. 1863. William was paid $75 for extra duty at $1.25 cent per day. Paid at Augusta, Georgia. William was with Wheeler's Cavalry Brigade.

My ggg uncle Reuben D. Adams's muster roll states that he was with Capt. James Strickland's Company, Northeast Cavalry Regiment commanded by Col. Robert Toombs for local defense; to serve the 9th and 6th Congressional Districts and counties of Wilkes, Lincoln, Columbia, Warren, and Richmond. He was married to Margaret Wilson and fathered 10 children. The family lived in Hart County, Ga. He died in 1901 and is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Franklin Co., Georgia.

John Poe Co. E 'Franklin Cavalry ' 3rd Ga Cavalry State Guards. The company organized under state authority on Aug. 20, 1863, Carnesville GA. Officers and men appear to have been Franklin County residents exempt from Confederate military service for one reason or another, usually age. Gov. Brown called the company into service on Sept. 15, 1863. The company's area of duty was defined as the 6th and 9th Congressional Districts; Lincoln, Wilkes, Columbia, Warren and Richmond Counties. After camping near Savannah for a few months, members were released from duty on Jan. 31, 1864. He was my GG Grandfather.
