Dennis and his brother Michael both served in the 21st. CT. Dennis was in Co. C, and I think Michael was in D. Last names were spelled differently at times. Dennis was wounded at Petersburg in 1864, but served untill the end. He died in 1898 in Mystic River Ct. and is buried in the local cemetery there. I have a copy of his pension records, and also a copy of his obit. He and his family were from Fethard, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. My family was from the Parish of Moyne, Cooleeney, Tipperary, Ireland. Approx. 4 miles apart. I am sure we are related, but at this time, I don't know how. His brother Michael died in California, and I also have his pension records. Dennis signed his name as Craddick, but his toombstone says Craddock. His survivors, not many, believe their name was Craddock, not Craddick. I will gladly give copies of his signature to any family members. I also have a copy of his brother Michael's Obit.

According to Williams military records he received partial pension. He tried for many years to get full pension to no avail. His file includes reams of documentation from doctors stating that he suffered from huge hernias and was unable to work. The details are very disturbing. He was discharged due to medical reasons yet I found an old newspaper article in ProQuest that states that he absented himself to avoid crossing the Rappahannock. Several other names are listed there as well. If you search under document ID 830261772 you can search for other names.

William Cantwell - Private

My Great-Great Grandfather Cantwell enlisted in Norwich CT in August of 1862. He was present with the 21st in reserve at Fredericksburg VA on December 13th of that year and as a result was an unfortunate participant of Burnside's 'Mud March' that followed. He reenlisted in 1864 but was several times sent to field hospitals for dysentery and rhumetism. He was in a hospital when the 21st was engaged at Cold Harbor VA. At the time he was 44 years old. The oldest soldier in Co.I He was soon after discharged for medical reasons and returned to Norwich CT. He died in 1891.
