Coon served in the Union Army under the names of Eleck and Ellick Ross. He enrolled on February 12, 1863 in Company C, 1st. Regiment Arkansas Infantry, at Fayetteville along with his brother Tal. He was discharged on August 10, 1865 at Fort Smith and came back home to Newton County. One of his granddaughters says that he got the nickname of Coon during his scouting days during the Civil War. They thought that he could see in the dark well enough to get around holes, brush and logs as well as any raccoon. His military record gives his description as 5 feet 9 inches, fair complexion, dark hair and blue eyes. His pension # is 792202.

Enlisted on 12 Feb. 1863 at Fayetteville, AR. He served as scout on detached service with Capt. James R. Vanderpool in Indian Territory and at Ft. Smith. He took part in skirmishes in Newton Co. in Northwest Arkansas and Southern Missouri he was discharged at Fort Smith on 10, Aug 1865.

Born in Giles County,Tennessee. Enlisted on 9/1/1863 at Fort Smith, AR as a Private. 30 years old. He mustered into 'D' Co. 1st Arkansas Infantry. He died of disease on 4/30/1864 at Fort Smith, ARKANSAS.

James is my gggrandfather.

This man was not only a brother-in-law to my gggrandfather, James W. Asher, but I believe they were also cousins. I just can't find proof.

This is my great-great grandfather who enlisted at Waldon, Arkansas on 10 Jan. 1864 at age 44. He died in 1904.

My ggggrandfather, settled along Bull Creek s of Ozark, Mo in 1838 with his father. Moved to Newton County Arkansas in 1850s (south of Jasper along Big Creek). Elected to Ark legislature prior to the war as a staunch union supporter. Organized Co F 1st Arkansas Inf, US in 1863. Resigned to join the 1864 Constitutional Convention in Little Rock, where served as President.

He lead his family back to Bull Creek before the war ended. He died in 1903 and is buried in Keeton-Cobb Cemetery on the old homesite at Bull Mills, Mo.

My g-g-Uncle, David C. Ruff, enlisted 27 Feb. 1863 at Fayetteville, Arkansas. Age 44, farmer,eyes blue, hair dark, complexion dark. Born in Giles Co., TN. Discharged to accept a commission as Captain in 46th Missouri Vols. in St. Louis. Brother to Henry Lewis Ruff who served as 1st. Sgt. Co. H, 15th Regt. Arkansas Militia and later in 13th Missouri 'Woods' Cavalry, both CSA. Good example of brother against brother.
