It was rumored that he died from wounds received during a fight with another prisoner, but official record is that he died from inflamation of the lungs. I would be grateful to learn more.

William Rufus Painter was 20 yrs old when he enlisted 1Oct.1861. Was absent sick at battles of Winchester & Cross Keys but with these exceptions was present in every other campaign & battle until captured at Gettsburg on July 2, 1863.Was held prisoner till wars end. He was good soilder. Colonel William C.Oates, Commander of the 15th Ala. Inf.Regt. The 15th took part in over forty engagements. Suffered heavy casualities at Cold Harbor,Slaughter Mt.,Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, and the Wilderness. This unit was with Lee at the surrender at Appomattox Court House with just over 170 of the more than 1200 who served with the unit during the war. Private Painter was captured on the 2nd day of Gettysburg by the 20th Maine Regt. at Little Round Top. Held a POW two yrs. at Camp Delaware until 14Jun 1865. In Aug 1893 he was elected the first commander of the Ozark Camp #380 United Confederate Veterans. Buried in Ozark, AL City Cemetery.
