William Cole Smith enlisted in the Army of the Confederate States on August 7, 1861, at Auburn, AL. He was a private in Company 'A', 14th Alabama Infantry Regiment, serving under Capt. W. D. Harrington. T. J. Judge was the Colonel of the 14th Regiment. He served for 3 years and 9 months and was wounded (shell shock) at Petersburg, VA in 1864, and surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia, with Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, and was paroled on April 10, 1865.

Caleb was my lost Greatgreat Grandfather, finally found through YDNA analysis. Caleb Jones, Private, Company I, (Entry 0841) enlisted on February 5, 1862 at Lineville, Talladega, Alabama. He appears on a register of officers and soldiers of the Army of the Confederate States who were killed in battle or died of wounds or disease. Killed on June 27, 1862 at Gaines Mill, [Virginia].
Caleb Jones appears on a register of claims for deceased officers and soldiers from Alabama that was filed on September 5, 1862. Certificate 4046. Claims documents are in the file, which Identifies Lucy Jones as the widow of Caleb Jones. Claim paid to June 27, 1862 as date of death. (National Archives, Individual Confederate Soldier Service Records, M311 Roll 234). I salute him.
