I have learned that Richard Harrison Griffin enlisted as a sergeant in Company A, 8th Infantry Regiment Alabama. He was born in South Carolina in 1818 and died in 1896 in Calhoun County, Alabama.

This is my gg grandfather (5/21/1821-10/6/1875). His father was George Logan (1772-aft 1840). His wife was Selena C. Fikes. His son George Alexander Logan (1889-1952) was my g grandfather. One of George's son's was Sammie Eiland Logan - my grandfather. He served in Co. A with my other gg grandfather, William Elbert Massey.

This is my gg grandfather (1833-1873). His father was Darling S. Massey (1806-1836). WEM's wife was his 1st cousin Martha Jarome Massey. One of William E. Massey's son's was James Moore Massey (my g grandfather). One of JMM's daughters was Martha Isobel Massey (my grandmother). WEM is buried in Perry Co.,AL in a Massey family cemetery with a CSA grave stone with 8th Ala Inf. and Chaplin marked on it. He lived at Radfordville, AL when he enlisted. He enlisted in the 8th Inf 2/16/1863 in Marion,AL as a PVT. Appt. Chaplin 11/10/1863. (In 1860 he was studying for the ministry at Howard College, Marion, AL). Was at Chancellorsville 5/3/1863. Absent sick, Gettysburg, July 2-3,1863 and Bristow Station, Oct.14, 1863. He originally enlisted in 40th Reg. Ala. Vol. (Col. Colman) 10/16/1862 (by W.B. Livingston) and discharged from it 11/28/1862. He survived the war but was murdered by a Dr. Moses H. Daniel in Perry County, AL.

James K. Quinn, b. 11 Aug. 1844, d. 1928, was the son of Oliver Stacy Quinn. He enlisted in Bibb County, AL. After the war, he settled in in Thorndale, Milam County,Texas, and had a profitable ranching business. His history is written up (with some incorrect family listings) in the biographical History of Texas (T-977-44-H - page 277). A copy is on file in the rare books section of the San Antonio library.

William was born 19 Aug 1834 in Jones County Georgia. In 1860 he is 26 years old and in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. The Post Office is at Pinkeyville. He has 15 cards in his archival file. He enlists 28 Aug 1862 at Camp Watts enlisted by Major Swanson. His first fight was at Fredericksburg, His second fight was at Chancellorsville where he was seriously wounded. According to his wife's statement on her petition for pension, he spent 6 months recovering before returning to his regiment. His next fight was on 14 Oct1863 where the was again seriously wounded. His record after that were noted as "ad" Absent - detached as he was assigned as an orderly at the regimental hospital. He was captured at Burksville, Va. 6 April 1865 and sent to City Point, arriving 14 April. He was released after swallowing the "Yellow Dog" 6 June 1865. William died 25 Feb 1909 at Alexander City, Tallapoosa Co. Ala and is buried in the Bice family cemetery in that town. He is in my family tree on the end of a remote branch by marriage.

John Frederick Englebert was born in July 7 1844 in Northport, Alabama. He was the son of Frederick Englebert (of Bremen, Germany) and Peachy Shirley (SC). He enlisted in Confederate Army 1 Apr 1863 with Co D. 8th AL Regiment and wounded and entered the hospital Richmond VA and returned to duty 27 Feb 1865. He was captured by Union Army 6 Apr 1865 at Farmville, VA. He took Oath of Allegiance Aug 1865. NOTE: A notarized statement made by W.T. Stamps stated J.F. Englebert worked in a shoe shop making shoes for the soldiers, which he did until a few months before the surrender. He was on Cavalry doing actual service as a Hard Castle Scout for about 6 months prior to the surrender. He was captured by a Croxtes Raid and held about 6 days and was paroled. -After the war he married Clementine Whatley and had 9 children. He died September 1925 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

Enlisted on May 20, 1861 at Greenville, Alabama. Wounded July 2, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg and left there. Surrendered with the Army of Northern Virginia

Official records have him as 'WJ Manning', but the 'J' was a typographical error. I have primary documents (wartime letter, copy of signed/sworn pension application statement) proving that William Isaac Manning served with the 8th Alabama Regiment, company G, from 9/8/1862 through 4/9/1865.

Born: 12/28/1834, Died 02/18/1914. Buried GoodHope Bapt. Ch. Cem. Pike County, Ala. He was in Co. G under CapT Emrich ('German Fusileers'). He was 4th Sgt 1863, 2nd sgt 1863 then 1st Sgt 1864. TAYLOR, John 1st Sgt 8th Ala. Inf.Co. G retired due to wounds.

From Heard Co GA

Henry John enlisted as H.J. Prichard, Sept. 12, 1861 in Company H of the 8th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, C.S.A. The 8th Arkansas was heavily involved in the battle of Shiloh Apr 6-7 of 1862 as part of Wood's Brigade in Hardee's Corps. H.J. was medically discharged June 13, 1862 with the diagnoses of 'hypertrophy of the heart.'

John was born 16 Dec 1846 in Perryville, Perry Co. Ala. He Joined on 2 April 1864. Sent to Virginia. He was engaged in the fighting around Richmond. He became ill and spent several weeks in the Stuart Hosp. in Richmond. His Regiment [ or what was left of it] surrendered at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865.

I'm not sure when Private Huff joined the 8th Co. K, but he served in the unit until his capture at Gettysburg.

He was shot through the lung during the Battle of the Wilderness in Va. Came home to Alabama to recover in Nov. 1864. Rejoined his men in Augusta, Ga but immediately developed pneumonia in that lung and died Feb. 7, 1965 in Augusta, Ga.

Died before Aug 1865. Name also spelled 'Suttles'.
