William had been working in his father's store when he enlistd on April 27th 1861 in Tuskgeege. He became camp commander in 1862. His unit was involved in the battles of Seven Pines and Antietam, where William was captured and briefly held before being exchanged. He was killed in the battle of Spotsylvania on May12, 1864.

The Archives list the following on his card. 11th Battn: Alabama Cavalry, Howards Battn: and 13th Confederate Cavalry. The 3rd Regt. completed its organization 20 August 1862 with ten companies A thry K. [* some of the men had prior service in the 2nd [Smith's] Reg. Tenn. Cav. He re enlisted on 14 Dec. 1862 at Nolinville, Tenn. His name appearson a Roll of POW's. dated 9 April, 1863 he was captured at Liberty on 7 April 1863 and paroled on 9 April 1863. This card is endorced with the following. These prisoners escaped while being transported to Nashville, the train being attacked by Gurrillas. His unit was surrendered at Hillsboro, NC 3 May, 1865 with the surrender of Joseph E Johnson.

George was my 5rh cousin several times removed.

John Milas Meadows - Private

John was born 17 Oct 1843 in Coosa Co. Ala. He has 4 cards in his archival file. Enlisted 15 April 1861 at about age 18 at Loundsboro, Ala for 1 year by Capt. Bertrand. He is in Virginia when his last CMR states, discharged by special order 317 on June 30 no year given. However, After the war he moved to Caldwell Co. Texas and applied for a pension which was initially disapproved but upon reapplication was approved on 31 Aug 1909 Pension # 17230. His son applied for a burial warrant, and it was also approved. His pension records are in the Texas archives, and he is listed under the name J.M. Meadores. To confuse things even more these records are comingled with one of his relatives J.W. Meadows who also served in Alabama and filed from the same county. He died 28 April 1920 in Fentress, Caldwell Co. Texas and is buried beside his wife Maretha Henrietta Carter in Highsmith Cem. Guadalupe Co. Texas. This unit fielded 1,651 men. 260 were KIA, 119 died of disease, 650 were discharged or transferred. 40 laid down their arms at Gettysburg.

'Jack' and a daughter Mollie. He died 22 July 1863, in Virginia, from sunstroke. William was a brother to Marcus Montgomery of 45th AL, Co. I and brother-in-law to Thomas J. Broadway of 3rd AL, Co. H. All three died in the war.
