Company G
Samuel Burgess Thomas - Private
Samuel was born 20 Aug 1847 in Warrior, Jefferson County Ala. He is 13 y/o in 1860 and is living in the next county over at Hanbus Mills in Walker Co. Ala. The following data comes from his wife's pension file and the Regimental record: He enlists at Arkadelphia, Blount Co Ala. [Allbritton Mills] in Oct 1862 at age 15 in the 12th Cavalry, Captain Savages Co. Commanded by Col. Warren S Reese. Allen's Brigade Wheelers Corps. He is later found in a CSA census as being in Co G 8th Alabama Infantry. "What happened" it appears that in the Atlanta Campaign Samuel lost his horse and was transferred to Infantry. He was captured near Rome Ga and sent to Camp Douglas. His wife Elizabeth C Avery [ b. 29 Sept. 1852 d. 4 Mar. 1945 ] filed for pension from Jefferson Co Ala. on 18 Jan 1921. She stated Samuel died 19 Jan 1917. I am not sure where he is buried but she was laid to rest at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church in Trussville, Jefferson Co. Ala.
