George was 41 years old when he appears on a Muster Roll for Capt. James F. Waddell's Company Light Artillery. Called into service of the Confederate States , in the Provisional Army under the terms of two years. He was transferred from 6th Regiment Alabama Vol's. Mustered in on 1 Feb. 1862 at Davis Ford, Va. for 2 years. His unit was designated 20th Battery Light Artillery. and at various times was also known as Emery's Battery, Waddell's Company. His unit was sent to Vicksburg, Miss. to defend the town. He was captured there on 4 July 1863. and paroled on 9 July 1863.
