Josiah was born 1832 to Tobias Sr. and Susan Emily (Vance) Mattox. He and his brother Tobias joined together and served in the same unit.

Tobias and Josiah were brothers, sons of Tobias Sr. and Harriet Kruzan. Tobias died from injuries received at Cedar Creek. He never married and had no issue.

Corporal, Company B, 13th W.Va. Infantry (Discharged as a Private.) Served in same company as his first cousin, James Allen 'Mouse' Rayburn.

From Hardesty's Biographical Atlas, Mason County, West Virgina, Published 1882: Mr. Rayburn has a war record of interest for services in the 1861 war. He enlisted August 2, 1862, in Company B, 13th West Virginia Regiment, and was made corporal September 1, following. He took part in the battles of Hurricane Bridge, Mud River, Shenandoah, Winchester, Strasburg, Fishers Hill, and Cedar Creek. He was also on the Lynchburg raid, which was steady fighting from Charlestown, West Virginia, to Lynchburg. Mr. Rayburn was wounded in the head at Hurricane Bridge, and taken prisoner at the battle of Cedar Creek, October 19, 1864, and sent to Libby prison. He was paroled February 22, 1865, but the sufferings he had undergone in prison had shattered his health, so that he was never fitted for duty during the remainder of his term of service. James A. Rayburn is by trade a blacksmith, and pursues this avocation in Robinson district. His postoffice address is Clifton, Mason county, West Virginia.

Alfred was age 23 when mustered into service on 8 Oct 1862. He was wounded at the battle of Cloyd's Mountain. [Gallipolis Gazette, Gallia Co., Ohio; Saturday, Mar 5, 1921] ALFRED ST. CLAIR, CIVL WAR VETERAN DEAD Mr. Alfred St. Clair, a soldier of the Civil War and a resident of this city for many years, died Friday evening at 5 o'clock, at the age of 78. Mr. St. Clair's home has been on Cedar Street. The funeral will be from his home Sunday afternoon, at 2 o'clock. The burial will be by George Wetherholt at Mound Hill cemetery. Mr. St. Clair is said to have been a good citizen and served his country well in time of need.

Enlisted Aug. 18, 1862 at Hartford City, WV. Mustered in Oct. 8, 1862 at Pt. Pleasant, WV. Discharged May 25, 1865 at Cumberland, MD Pension records say that Sheldon contracted 'disease of eyes, lung troubles, and general debility' while on march from mouth of Coal River to Hurricane Bridge, WV, in Spring of 1863. Sent to hospitals at Pt. Pleasant WV, Gallipolis OH, and Claryville MD (where he was discharged). He remained 1/2 disabled for life, and received $12/mo. pension to May 4, 1896.
