My GGrandfather Samuel R. Clarke was with the 9th. WV Infantry. He lived in Ironton Ohio. the story goes that he joined when he was 16 but i don't think that is so. So if you can help me on finding his records I would really appreciate it.

Fought and was wounded at the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain near Dublin, Virginia. Became a minister after the Civil War. Born: 15MAY1842, Braxton Co, Flatwoods, (W) Va Died: 14MAR1928, Buried: Newville Cemeter Parents: John and Rebecca Morrison Gillespie Brother: Paulser Gillespie Married 1869 to Naomi Hyer - had 2 children by this marriage Remarried 1875 to Sarah J. Skidmore (d. 1915) - produced 7 children by this marriage

John was in the 141st militia, Ravenswood Patrol when he was 17 years old. He mustered in August 19, 1861 serving as sergeant. He was in Co. A. Captain J.V. Rowley commander .John R. Shockey belonged to Co. A. 9th WV. infantry Union Army during the civil war. He ranked in as a private and ranked out as a corporal. Company A. Also belonged to 1st Regiment, W.Va. Veteran Infantry. Sergeant. This regiment was formed by he consolidation of the 9th and 5th WV infantry on November 9th 1864. His address is listed as Big Sandy on these records. He is buried in West Virginia along side his brother Henry who served in the 11th WV. Infantry.

Thomas was captured at the Battle of Lynchburg, VA 19 Jun 1864 and exchanged 6 Dec 1864 at Charleston, SC. He arrived at Camp Parole, MD 31 Dec 1864 He was my Ggrandfather.

William McCune, grandson of Peter and son of Daniel McCune and Rebecca Nichols McCune, was born in Gilmer County. He grew up in central West Virginia and listed Calhoun County as his home when he enlisted in Co. B, 9th WV Infantry during the Civil War. He was wounded during the Battle of Cedar Creek (1864) and was discharged in December of the same year.

William enrolled for duty on 22 Jan 1862 and was mustered as a soldier on 28 Feb 1862. Born in Meigs County, Ohio. Married Henrietta Staats in Ravenswood, Jackson County, West Virginia. Wounded on 20 July 1864 at the Battle at Winchester. 24 July 1864 removed to the General hospital at Claryville, Maryland. Died from wounds 19 Aug 1864. Buried at the Hospital Cemetery then later moved to Antietam Cemetery in Maryland. Died age 33 leaving wife and 6 children (the last being born four days after William's death.)

Great Grandfather Alexander F. Anderson fought in the Battle of Cedar Creek in 1864 and received a lithograph print of battle at a reuninon after the war. He Died in 1911 and buried in Anderson Family cemetery near Harmony, WV. His grave is marked with a military marker that indicates 'Company F WV 9th Infantry'

John'Wesley' Howard was imprisoned in the infamous 'Salibury Prison' in NC. He was returned via the Steamer 'Guide' in June 1862 to NY. He is listed as 9th Va on prisoner list. His pension papers state he was in Co.H 9th WV Infantry. WVa did not exist as a state until 1863.

Private Co. K. 9th West Virginia Infantry Tried by Court Martial on the charge of desertion. Deserted October 30, 1862, and reformed February 25, 1864. Found guilty and sentenced to forfeit all pay and allowances now due and that may hereafter become due. Performed hard labor at the military prison, Wheeling, West Virginia, with ball and chain attached to his left ankle for the remainder of his term of service. Per General Order No. 6, Department of West Virginia, March 19, 1864. Discharged at Wheeling, West Virginia on April 30, 1865 by expiration of service.

Enlisted at age 55. It has never been determined whether Stewart was deserter or not. The family contends that he was not a deserter but was home on furlough. When he arrived home he was warned by neighbors that the Home Guards, who were made up of 'ne'er-do-well's' of the community, were looking for him as a deserter. Stewart placed his carbine in a tree stump near his house and went unarmed looking for the Home Guards. When he came upon them, he volunteered to go with them to Cottageville where the matter of his desertion would be further discussed. On the way he was shot in the back by Job Snyders either by accident or murder. I believe it was the latter.

John Gerlach mustered in on 06 Feb 1862 at Cottageville, Jackson Co., West Virginia. The 9th WVA Infantry was disbanded in Nov 1864, at which time, John Gerlach joined Co. F, 1st WVA Volunteer and was mustered out on 06 Jul 1865.

Benjamin Ridenour also served in Co. K, 1st WV Veterans Volunteer Infantry when the 9th was disbanded in Nov 1864. His war records also contain his surname as Ridenar, Ridener, and Ridenow. He was 16 years old when he signed up for service.

Martin entered service as a private and mustered out as a Corporal. He was mustered in on 18 Aug 1862 at Cottageville, Jackson Co., VA; discharged on 20 Jun 1865 at Richmond, VA. He served with his sons Samuel and Benjamin. Martin Ridenour died on 20 Dec 1898 at the home of his daughter, Sophronia Ridenour Prothero, in Kansas City, Kansas. He is buried at Fort Scott National Cemetery, Bourbon Co., Kansas (Plot: 1 0 129-A)

Samuel played the fife for his company and mustered in at age 18 on Mar 19, 1864. Samuel served in same unit as his father, Martin Ridenour, and brother, Benjamin.
