31st Texas Infantry

My great grandfather join the Company of Infantry, Texas State Troops,31st. Militia Brigade! MUSTER ROLL 521: The Governor Of Texas transferred them to the Confederate States Provisional Army on Oct.6,1863. They stayed home in case of lndian raids! As a PVT he recieved $ 250, a horse,six-shooter and a rifle. He lived in D'Hanis,Tx.

Served throughout the war, Company B., 31st Brigade District, Texas State Troops (Hondo, D'Hanis, Quihi, New Fountain, Yancey). The Texas State Troops are not known to have participated in any battles against Union forces (except perhaps in the Sabine Pass area), but they were the home guard, battling banditos and indians, and keeping the families and towns at home safe.

The only information i have on my great,great grandfather Manuel Cervantes service is from his pension application #8965 which was approved in 1902, he stated that he served from 1863 to 1865 with company D 31st regiment infantry

I have become aware that the correct unit description is the 31st Texas Cavalry (Dismounted) who served as infantry east of the Mississippi River. This is my great grandfather, info found in Texas pension application files. Served for 2 years from 1863 (age 15) to the wars end in 1865 (age 17). He had 24 children in Dallas County, TX, 15 of whom lived to adulthood. Born in Dallas County in 1848, served as a teenager. He continued to become a father into his late 60''s due to a 1901-1902 second marriage to a much younger woman. Buried in Rains-Hall Cemetery, Combine, TX. His second wife died in 1984 at the age of 102 to 104 and we believe is a candidate for the Oldest Living Widow of a Civil War Veteran from the State of Texas.
