22nd Texas Infantry

I found this soldier in the 22 Texas regiment on Ancestery.com

Looking for any pictures or description of the 22nds battle flag. My Great Great Grandfather did not talk about his war service to the family very much. I knew he had served but all the info I have comes from Genealogical research. Sgt. John W. Burns lived the ramainder of his life in the Como area of Hopkins co. in northeast Texas. He applied for confederate pension in 1909. It is the most complete document I have about his war service. Also the Roll for Company A. of the 22nd has his name. He is buried in Caney cemetary just outside of Pickton Texas in Hopkins county. I have pictures of him taken about 15 to 20 years after the war if anyone is putting together a web page etc.

records obtained from Texas archives library show joseph f. howell enlisted in 1861 in Titus Co.Texas and was sworn in at Gilmer, Upsher Co. Texas February 1862. He served in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas and remained in service until May 1865. A soldier Issac Mabrey from Montauge Co. served with him during the entire war.

Enlisted in Robertson County Texas in 1862. Can't find his name in the Soldiers and Sailors System by the National Park Service, but that doesn't mean much as thousands are missing there. His tombstone reads Co B, 22nd Texas (Hubbards) Infantry Regiment. Honorable discharge 1864. I have no idea if he was wounded but looking at the Limestone/Freestone Counties Joe Johnston Camp 94 of the Confederate Veterans, he was present (certified) at their reunion of 1894. He was listed as in Co C, 22nd Texas Infantry (Hubbards). Shortly after, he and the family went to Oklahoma and homesteaded land. Drought brought them back to Sunset (west Texas) where he passed away in 1912. His daughter, my Grandmother, said they made many Confederate reunions when she was small.

Daniel was born 15 May 1832 in Morgan County Ala. He served in this Regiment [Hubbard's] and in the 4th Texas Cav aka 4th Mounted Vols. [ part of 1 Regt Sibley's Brigade] Enlisted 12 May 1862 at Moscow, discharged later by Surgeons Certificate for bad leg. He was recalled to duty and enlisted 8 Nov 1862 at Livingston in Co F 4th Texas Cav. and in 14 Jan 1864 assigned as a Teamster.

In 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate army, in Company C, Twenty- second Texas infantry, commanded by Colonel Hubbard, and was appointed first lieutenant of his company. He was wounded at Jenkin's Ferry, but on his recovery rejoined his company and served till the final surrender in 1865.

This is my great grand father who joined the Infantry in Gilmer, Texas in 1862 and was disbanded in Galveston, TX 1865. H was in many battles and was a patient at Camp Hope during the terrible epidemic of typhoid,measles, mumps & pneumonia that killed over 5,500 men.

Joseph Pendergrass was married to Sarah Carter who was a sister to John Harmon Carter, my great grandfather. Sarah was my great aunt and Joseph my great uncle. Joseph died in Dec. 1862 at Camp Nelson, Ark.of pneumonia during an epidemic of measles, mumps, pneumonia and typhoid.

James H.F. Thomas is my great,great,grandfather. He lived his life in Thomas Crossing, Angelina, Texas, USA.

Captured at the fall of Fort DeRussy near Marksville, LA, March 14, 1863. Exchanged in July 1863 and served until the war's end.

John was 29 Years old when he joined 10 Mar 1862 at Camp Hubbard, at Livingston in Capt John Guynes' Co. Texas Infantry for 3 years by H Hutto. He is appointed 2nd Lieut. 17 June 1862. Served under Walker's Division primarily west of the Mississippi. Louisiana & Arkansas. His records show he was promoted to 1st Lieut. date of promotion unknown. Fought in the Red River Campaign in Louisiana. Fought at Mansfield. Pleasant Hill, and in Ark. against the campaign of Union Gen. Steel's. at Marks Mills & Jenkins Ferry. The Regiment returned to Texas in early 1865 an disbanded. It officially surrendered 2 Jun 1865. My cousin was his third wife, she died the following year and he remarried for the 4th time.

John apparently lost a brother at the Battle of Pleasant Hill (Louisiana)

William was born in Smith Co. Texas. he was 35 years old when he enlisted in Quitman Co. Texas on 10 May 1862 for 3 years in Capt J.J. Carter's Co. Hubbard's Regiment Texas Infantry. After his discharge he reenlisted in Co B 1st Regt. Texas Cavalry [State Troops 6 months.] This Regiment was part of Walker's Texas Division and served during the war completely west of the Mississippi. Primarily in Louisiana & Arkansas. Fought against Union Gen. Nathanial Banks's Red River Campaign. Battles of Mansfield & Pleasant Hill. Took part in the fight against Union Gen. Fredrick Steel's expedition in Arkansas. Battles of Mark's Mills & Jenkin's Ferry. In the summer of 1864 the regiment was transferred to Hempstead, Texas. In early 1865 most of the men disbanded and returned home. The official surrender along with the other Trans- Mississippi troops was on 2 June 1865.

Native of North Carolina, George married Sarah Edwards in Smith County on 3 October 1861. Died in Harmon County, Oklahoma in 1929.

Probably joined out of Edom, Texas in Van Zant County. His wife died in 1862 after giving birth to a son. He moved his family to Coryell county where there were kinfolks, and he and his oldest son, Joseph B. Hackney joined the 22nd infantry. He is burried near Gatesville in Coryell county.

Probably enter service out of Edom, Texas (Van Zandt county). He fought side by side with his father, Aaron G. Hackney. He was most likely 15 (at most 16) when he entered service. His burial site is unknown.

W.B. Huddle lived near Chandler, Texas and served with brothers John and Rufus who were killed at Mansfield.

Early in the war he enlisted from Edom, Van Zandt Co., Tx. and served in Herndon's Co. D (Bate's)13th Tx. Inf. He served in Hubbard's 22nd Infantry, Sharp's Company 'I', in 1863. Other evidence of service tells that he worked mining saltpeter for the making of gunpowder. His other service was in Co.F 2nd Texas State Troops, at Camp Ford, Tyler, Tx. guarding captured Union prisoners. This was in the later part of 1863 until Feb. 1864. He served in one of these units until the close of the war. He returned to the Colfax, Edom area of Van Zandt Co., where he died 26 Aug 1897. His wife Margaret applied and was granted a widow's pension.

George was born in Thomas County, Georgia. In 1860 he is in Texas. Enlists 15 Mar 1862 at Tyler, Texas in Capt. Ed Sharp's Company as part of Walkers Texas Division. He has 12 cards in his archival file. Other than being out sick twice and a four-month AWOL He served until the end of the war. This unit served mostly in the Arkansas and Louisiana area. Did service in the Red River Campaign. His 3rd wife Nancy Elizabeth Meador filed for and received a pension based on his service. He died 16 Mar. 1877 and is buried at Hays Springs, Grapeland, Houston Co. Texas.

Edwin was born in Denmark, Madison County, Tennessee 1 Jan 1837. He has 6 cards in his archival file. The 1860 census has him in Beat 12, Houston Co. Texas, the Post Office is at Elk Hart. He enlisted 16 June 1862 at Palestine, Texas in Capt. B.F. Parks Co. Hubbard's Regiment. It is 75 miles to the rendezvous. This Regiment operated in Arkansas and Louisiana and participated in the Red River Campaign. He died in Grapeland, Houston Co. Texas. His wife Nancy Jane applied for a pension, and it was approved.

Dr. Edwin Pinckney Becton was a Surgeon in the 22nd Texas Infantry (CSA). He was born on June 27, 1834 in Gibson Co., TN. Died January 14, 1901 in Greenville, Hunt Co. TX. I am his Great-Great Grandson.
