21st Texas Infantry

We just learned that my great-grandfather was in the Civil War, Griffin's Battalion, Texas 21st Infantry. We have always been known as Ballards, but find some of his records are recorded as Bellar. Being from Louisiana plantation country, how his name was pronounced there may have something to do with this spelling. We just do not know at this point. Be interested in finding out about this battalion in its everyday life during the war.

my gggrandfather, lost leg during war. Nacogdoches, TX

John was born in Linn Co Iowa 17 April 1836 and moved to Texas as apparently did other members of his family. He served in Co A 21st Regiment Texas Infantry. His brother in law as well as two other relatives are found in this Regiment. in Co I. This was a consolidated unit that served along the Texas coast at Montagorda Island, Sabine Pass and for a short time at Marshall, Texas. They were moved to Shreveport La. late in the war. Their situation is unique as their is no record of them ever being in combat. They served mostly as couriers and scouts. Surrendered June 1865. We are related by a distant marriage. He died 13 Jan 1917 and is buried in Mattox Cem. Diana, Upshar Co Texas

Stephen was born 6 Nov 1843 in Jasper, Jasper Co. Texas. He a total of 15 cards in his archival file. He first enlisted on 12 Oct 1861 at age 18 at Sabin Pass, Tx. in Capt. J.M. Blair's Co. A Likens 11th Battalion Texas Vol's. [Spaight's] He saw action at Sabine Pass and in the Red River Campaign. The 11th had components of Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery. In mid 1864 the 11th Battalion was consolidated and became Co A 21st Texas Infantry. 25 Feb 1864 he was assigned as a nurse. 29 June he is assigned as provost guard to guard and hunt down escaped prisoners. On 30 March he is a guard on a train to Galveston. He died 26 June 1926 at Buna, Antioch, Jasper Co. Texas and is buried in the town cemetery. He is the cousin of my distant cousin.

James Monroe LOCKER (1833 - 1920, TX) enlisted Bosque Co., TX (for the duration of the War) C.S.A. Company B 21 Calvary, Capt. Allan S. Anderson, Hawpe's Reg't, Sgt. 28 yrs. James Monroe LOCKER is my 2nd Great grandfather.

No records have been found for David R. Pilcher after he was discharged from the unit for being overage.

Son of Constant Dodson, grandson of Joel Dodson & Frances Land. Named for his grandfather & my 4 x great-grandfather, Jonathan Land of North Carolina. Served as a private in Co.C 21st Tx Infantry Battalion later merged with the 11th Cav to form the 21st regiment. Enlisted in Regiment May 1, 1864 at Sabine Pass.

Allen Kuykendall was a member of Co. 'D', Griffin's Battalion, TX Inf., which later became Co. 'D', Griffin's Regiment, 21st TX Infantry. He had 4 nephews serving in Confederate units: John Gabriel Kuykendall, 1st SGT, Co. 'H', 4th Arkansas Infantry. Spear Fort Kuykendall, Pvt, Co. 'D', 15th Northwest Arkansas Infantry. David Hamilton Kuykendall, Pvt, Co. 'H', 24th Arkansas Infantry, then with Co. 'E', Hardy's Arkansas Infantry. Issac Kuykendall, Pvt, Co.'H', 4th Arkansas Infantry.

Enlisted July 9, 1862 Denton Co. TX Served mostly in or near Sabine Pass and Beaumont area. Discharged August 1865

James Monroe Hill died in the Confederate Home in Ardmore, Oklahoma in 1919. He was buried in Buckhorn Cemetery in Murray County, Oklahoma

Pvt, Co C, 11th (Spaight's) Bn, TX Volunteers (Cav & Inf) & Pvt, Co E, 21st TX Inf Rgt. Died abt 1889. The 21st Texas Infantry Regiment was organized during the spring of 1864 by consolidating the 11th (Spaight's) Texas Cavalry and Infantry Battalion and Griffin's Texas Infantry Battalion.

i found a relitive in my graveyard that had this on his head stone H.V. Barrow. CO. F 21 Texas INF. C.S.A

William was born in Twiggs County, Georgia 7 Oct 1831. The 1860 Census finds him in at age 28 in Tyler Co, Texas, the Post Office is at Woodville. He enlisted 12 Dec 1861 at Sabine Pass, Texas in Capt. James Colliers Company which became Co D Spaight's Battalion Texas Vols, Enlisted by Major Likens for one year. The Battalion was poorly provisioned and suffered greatly. It served in the Trans Mississippi Dept. in the Paul Herbert Brigade. and saw action in the Red River campaign in Louisiana. In Aug 1863 he is on extra duty as a cook in the camp hospital. In the Spring of 1864 in an effort to cobble together a viable force The 21st Texas Infantry known as Griffin's and the 11th Battalion Cav/infantry were consolidated. This unit had the components to be known as a legion but was never officially given that designation. William served in Co H in the 21st. The 21st was commanded by Col. Ashley W Spaight. It saw no combat and served along the Texas coast as scouts and performing garrison duty. It disbanded in May of 1865. William has 7 items in his 11th Battalion and 2 in the 21st. The only useful data on the CMR's for the 21st is that he was granted a 60 day leave in Feb 1865. William died 1 April 1894 in Harvey, Brazos County, Texas. He is buried in the Old Bethel Cem, College Station, in aforesaid county. He was the father-in-law of my 3rd cousin 3 x removed.

Listed on 1860 Jasper Co TX Census with wife Clarissa, step sons Lafayette and Allen Richardson and mother Martha Crockett.

Andrew was my ggggrandfather through his son Leonard Louis Crockett who married 2nd Sinia 'Sinny' Jane Strawthers He was born in LA or MS in 1825 and came to Buna JAsper Co Tx with his mother Martha Durdin Crockett and his married sisters Sarah Crockett Lowe Richardson and Lettie Crockett Whitmire. Dying of Disease on March 16, 1865 in West Liberty Texas (Now Dayton Liberty co TX) Andrew and Clarissa Ann Richardson Richardson a widow with 2 children where married on 8-7-1851 in Buna Jasper Co TX (Hence the 2 Richardson's names is becuase she was born a Richardson and married her 2nd cousin Robert W Richardson before her marriage to Andrew) After the death of Andrew she married a 3rd time to CW Veteran Wyatt 'Wiley' wood Foster a man 15 years younger than her) For more information please visit my home page.
