19th Texas Infantry

Born in Georgia, Hines moved to Texas circa 1850-55. He lived on the Hines Place plantation in Freestone Co., Texas.(Note: Hines is the son-in-law of Brigadier General Joseph Johnson, also of the 19th Texas.) Hines was originally a volunteer in the Reserve Company, Beat No. 5, in Captain John L. Wortham's Company of the 19th Texas Brigade. In 1863, he joined Captain James Steele's Company, and then in 1865, he joined Captain C.B. Duncan's Company.

Johnson was elected to the office of Brigadier General in 1863. He enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Major. He had served in the Indian Wars in Georgia and Florida, first as a Captain in 1838, then later as a Major in 1846. (Note: Johnson's son-in-law, Major William M. Hines, also served in the 19th Brigade.) Johnson moved his family to Freestone Co., Texas in 1854, after originally arriving in Brazos Co., Texas in 1848. Johnson owned a 10,550 acre cotton plantation seven miles west of Fairfield (in Freestone Co.), where he built the 'Rock House,' which is still owned by the family today.

This was my great great grandfather on my fathers side. My late grandmothers grandfather. He was married to Mourning Elizabeth Nunn Roan. Morning Elizabeth Nunn Roan is related to former United States Senator from Georgia, Samuel Augustus Nunn Jr. He did survived the war. He and Mourning Elizabeth would go on and have many children, He was born on January 4, 1836 and died on January 11, 1910.. Mourning Elizabeth was born on April 6, 1836 and died on March 7, 1903. Both are buried next to each other in Commerce, Texas at the Lebanon Cemetery.

My Great-Great-Grandfather

My great great grandfather lost his right leg from the knee down at the battle of Jenkin's Ferry in the spring of 1864.

Thomas M White's family arrived in Redwater Bowie Co TX 1846, from Union Co SC. He is buried at Center Ridge Cemetery, Maud Bowie Co TX. He lived in Bowie Co his entire life. He was good friends with J. N. Foster and Henry Favor of Co F, 19th Texas Infantry. Thomas is my Great Grandfather.

JRK served in the Civil War between 1860- 1865. He enrolled on May 10, 1862 as a 3rd Lt. of Company B. Wallace 19th Texas Infantry, commanded by Capt. Harvey A. Wallace. Sometime between May 10 and July 1, 1862, he was promoted to 2nd Lt. The 19th Infantry left for the front on July 28th, 1862. On November 29th, 1862, he had been promoted to 1st Lt. In May, 1863, JRK signs the roll as commanding officer of the company. He also appears on the Roll of Prisoners of War, captured at Ft. DeRussy, LA, March 14, 1864 and was received at Baton Rouge, LA on March 17, 1864. He was later tranferred to New Orleans, La and was exchanged at Red River Landing on July 22, 1864. His service record says that while serving as Prisoner of War, he was confined at 21 Rampart St., New Orleans, La. On April 2, 1865, he returned from a leave of absence to a station near Hempstead, TX. He received his Parole of Honor, July 12, 1865, at Henderson, Rusk Co., Texas. ( Capt Wallace kept a journal of the 19th Infantry and much is recorded regarding their war experiences).

Mustered May 10, 1862. Suffered from measles during his service. During one of the many marches, he was so weary, he fell asleep in the rain. His buddies had to wake him for the water was getting dangerously high on his face. He was surrendered at New Orleans on May 26, 1865. His application for a pension was denied because he was not indigent. After the war, he returned to Rusk County, TX where he farmed and operated a mill for making syrup from sugar cane. That mill was still being operated by his grandson (Rade Harper) in the 1960's.

'The Realm of Rusk Co.', by Garland Farmer. P. 60: G. W. Holleman, 40, Rusk County listed as a private in Co. H, 19th Texas Infantry formed by Captain Harvey A. Wallace between May 4 - July 18, 1862. 'Nacogdoches County History' - Dallas Library F483 (Family 483) 'Green Wilson Holleman was captured at the battle in Many, Louisiana and later traded as a prisoner of war and Clinton D. Holleman was killed during the fighting.' Application for veteran benefits indicate he suffered from measles during the war, then suffered from partial blindness afterward.

'The Realm of Rusk County' by Garland Farmer, page 62 shows Private S. Holly, 32, Mt. Enterprise in Captain Harvey A. Wallace's Co. H. 19th TX Infantry organized between May 4 - July 28, 1862. Application for veteran's pension states: 'A depression in the breast over the right lung said to have been caused by being struck with a piece of shell.' Surname also spelled 'Holley'
