13th Texas Infantry

I believe the "C. H." stands for "Charles Henry,"; his father is also with him in another regiment. His name was Asa S. Rose. According to the diary of Victor Rose, C. H. Rose died, but later, I saw that he was a POW, released and received a pardon in Houston, Texas, dated June 22, 1865 while serving under Gen. E, Kirby Smith dated

My Grandfather John R. Alley joined the 2nd Co A ,13th Texas Infentry at Columbus, Texas on May 7th 1864 and granted a 20 day leave.The unit probably went to Louisiana. This is all the information that I Have.

Copy of Confederate Service Record from Ft. Bend Co. Library: Henry Wheaton enlisted in Co. B of the 13th Texas Infantry, Bates Regiment in Velasco, Tx on May 12, 1864. His name appears on the Hospital register of this unit being admitted Aug 23, 1864 suffering from pneumonia and returned to duty Sep 1, 1864.

Richard Calvin (R.C.) Burnett enlisted in Van Zandt County and mustered in Canton. He contracted yellow fever while in Valesco was furloughed to his home in Wood County for recovery, failed to return to duty and is believed to have died in route from Wood County to Valesco.

He was known primarily by his initials. H.B. Entered service from Edom, Texas. He served with this unit at the coastline of Texas until the close of the war. He returned home but later moved to near Ennis, Ellis, Co., Tx.

Thomas L. Dunn (T.L.) enlisted in Ed Clark's Invincibles of Smith Co., 12th Brig, TST in May 1861. He was enrolled in Tyler, TX for a period of 1 year. On Dec. 26, 1861 he joined for duty and was enrolled in the 13th Infantry at Valasco, TX. His duty was Musician in the company band. On March 29, 1862 he was certified as unfit for duty due to illness. He was discharged and sent home to Tyler, Smith Co. travelling through Navasota. It is assumed that he died enroute having never reached Tyler.

Private, Enlisted May 12, 1863 in Navarro County. Died in Columbia, Texas on June 2, 1864 of disease. I'm trying to find out where he is buried.

He was known by his initials H.C. and rarely by Henry. He enlisted 1 May 1862 from Edom, Texas into Cap't. Herndon's Co. D, Bate's 13th Texas Infantry Regiment. This unit served at Velasco near the mouth of the Brazos River and the Gulf of Mexico. He was never transfered to another unit and served until the close of the war. After the war he returned home to Edom,Texas and died 1 April 1930.

In 1861 William Melton was elected Captian Co. E 13th Regt Inf. TX, he was 3 at the time and felt he was too old so resigned in favor of Capt C. M. Winkler, he was however highly respected and assigned for a special recruitment service for the CSA and continued to hold the title of Captain. Company was known at various times as Captain Melton's Co., Captain Clark's Co and Co E Bates' Regiment Texas Volunteers; and Company E, 13th Regiment Texas Infantry.

Henry Blanton Scott enlisted as a private in Moss''s Company E of the Thirteenth Texas Infantry Regiment. Before he was mustered out he had risen to the rank of lieutenant This unit was made up of personnel from Navarro County, Texas. In 1862, Company E was accepted into Co. Joseph W. Speight''s regiment and became a part of the Fifteenth Texas Infantry Regiment.

Lott Wilson was born in Illinois on 7 Aug 1831. He enlisted in the 13th Texas from Navarro Co., Texas. He died 29 Aug 1872 near Blooming Grove, Navarro Co., Texas. He is buried at Grange Hall Cemetery, Navarro Co., Texas.

Fletcher was born Oct 1837 in Virginia. In 1860 he is 23 living in Fayette Co. Texas. His enlisted [date is unknown] in Capt. B.F Dunn's Co. Wallers Texas Cav. This was incorporated into Col. Joseph Bates's 13th Infantry. This regiment has artillery/ cavalry and infantry. It was assigned to the Western District of Texas, Dept of Texas. Their main mission was the defense of the Texas Coastline with emphasis on Galveston Bay. He has 5 cards in his archival file, and I found 2 short historical overviews of the 13th Texas Infantry. Battles: San Luis Pass April 5-6, 1862, Near Velasco, Texas, 4 July 1862, and again at this location 11 Aug 1862, and Sterling Plantation 29 Sept. 1863. He is a patient in the 13th Regt Hospital 22 June 1864 - 9 July 1864. On 29 Sept 1864 he is given a 20-day furlough to Fayette County. He was paroled 7 July 1865. He was the father-in-law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed. He received a pension for his service to the Confederacy and when he died his wife applied and received a pension. She applied 11 Oct 1913 from Cleveland, Liberty Co. Texas. They are buried in the Oak Shade Cem. In the afore said town.

Meredith Walton, descended from a long line of Revolutionary War and War of 1812 patriots, was born in Robertson County, Tennessee in 1819. He enlisted in the Brazoria Rangers (G Company)at Velasco on November 4, 1861 at the age of 42! He was discharged under the Act of April 16, 1862, due to his age. After paying for his expenses, his pay at discharge was CS$ 79.73.

James Knox Polk Gilliam was a son of Allen Gilliam and Louisa M Garrett. He married May 'Mertie' Florence Russell. He and Mertie are buried in Friendship Cemetery, Smith County, TX. His eldest daughter Hallie Frances Gilliam Married Charles Vernon Meadows. Hallie and Charlie were my grandparents, and are also buried in Friendship Cemetery.

Leonides was born in Noxubee County Mississippi. In 1860 he was 17 years old and living in Jasper Co. Texas. He enlisted and mustered 8 Nov 1861 in Capt I.R. Burch's Co of Artillery [Spaight's] Major Liken's Battalion of Texas Vols. at Sabine Pass for 12 months. His rank was 4th Corporal and rose to 3rd Sergeant. Thru consolidation this became Co I 13th Regiment Texas Infantry. His rank was 4th Sergt. This unit was assigned to the Dept of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. He has 9 cards in the 11th Battalion and 3 in the 13th Regiment in the archival files. Saw action along the coast, Sabine Pass, Calcasieu Pass in the Red River Campaign in Louisiana. He is my direct kin. He died 10 April 1914 in Jasper Co. Texas.
