4th Texas Infantry

Kruse was captured early one morning while leaving the infantry on a 'hunch.' While captured, Kruse, who had a knack for impressing peers with simple card and magic tricks, ended up tricking the guards to let him blindfold them and sneak back to his own infantry. When he returned, he was rewarded with an 'old, musty sock' as a joke but his cleverness did not go unnoticed. The next day he was killed in combat with a bullet that traveled through his nose canal up to his brain.

John Marshall is commonly listed as a Colonel, but his promotion had been approved to Brigadier General prior to his death. Marshall was killed at the battle of Gaines' Mill in Virginia before the promotion reached his hands and thus never knew he had been promoted.

Melvin H Alice was my 4 times great grand father. He enlisted at Goliad Texas in company A. He stayed in service and fought at the battles of Manassas and Chicamunga. We are looking for more information on him as of right now we do not know if he was captured or injured. We do know though he survived and died in Texas in 1875 leaving behind my 4 times great grandmother and his children.

William was born 20 Oct 1842 in Yalobusha Co Miss. In 1860 he is 17 y/o living in DeWitt, Texas. He was enlisted by Capt J.C.G. Key on 18 March 1862 at Gonzales, this company was also known as [Hartman Rifles] He has 14 cards in his archival file and are under William C. Cavitt. He joined his unit in Virginia. He was captured at Suffolk Va. and paroled 13 May 1863 and exchanged at City Point. He was shot in the left leg at the battle of Chickamauga 19 Sept 1863 and had the lower third of his left leg amputated. He returned to Texas and applied for a pension which was approved 27 Mar 1905. He died 3 Sept 1918 in New Mexico. He was the father - in - Law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.

Before Sharpsburg Born in Ireland, he was a laborer in England, and arrived in New York from Liverpool in 1846. By 1861 he was living in Texas and enlisted in Company A, 4th Texas Infantry in Guadalupe County in June. He was ill and finally joined his Regiment in Northern Virginia in August 1862. He was assigned as scout and courier to General Hood, date not given. On the Campaign He was with his Company in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was present, but sick, at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862. From General Hood's Report: "I would be wrong in not acknowledging the valuable services rendered during the several engagements, in transmitting orders, of the following couriers of this command: M. M. Templeman, T. W. C. Lake, J.P. Mahoney, James Malone, W. E. Duncan, J. A. Mann, W. J. Barbee, W. G. Jesse, J. I. Haggerty, and J. H. Drake." The rest of the War He was captured on 2 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA, and held for four months at Fort Mifflin, Philadelphia. He was then charged as a spy, and sent to Fort Delaware. He apparently escaped, probably in 1864, and returned to his unit on 24 July 1864. I will add more info as I dig deeper. I had heard these stories passed down and it was pretty awesome to find the history. He would be my great, great great Uncle.

Wilson L. Holcombe was my great grandfather. He was captured at Grttysburg, July 2, 1863 and sent to Point Lookout, MD prison camp. He was released Feb. 27, 1864 on 'taking the oath' and joining the U.S. service. Any information or sdvice that would aid my research would be appreciated. Leon Holcomb

Henry enlisted with his brother, Robert, in Robertson County, Texas. He was wounded at Gaines Mill June 2, 1862. After recovering from an arm amputation at Chimburazo Hospital, he was discharged for disability and returned to Texas in August 1862

Company was known as the 'Robertson Five Shooters' from the Colt revolving rifles they carried. He was wounded at Malvern Hill and captured in the Nashville campaign (December 3, 1863). He was held in Rock Island Prison in Ill. He later escaped from the prison and returned to Texas (1865). His older brother (Henry) was also in the unit. He was wounded at Gaines Mill (June 2, 1862)and retired from further duties due to his injury (right arm amputated).

Robertson Five Shooters b. 7 Jan 1841 d. 15 Jun 1904

Commander of Company C, joined Robertson's Rifles in Texas. Wounded at Gettysburg, Chickamauga, and Chaffin's Farm. Survived war and returned to live in Texas.

Pvt Smith first enlisted with Company C 'Roberson's Five Shooters' and later served with Company G, 'Grimes County Greys'. He survived the war and returned to his home.

M.H. Van Dusen suffered a head wound at Gettysburg, July 3rd, 1863. He survived the war and lived to the ripe old age of 93.

Daniel has two CMR's and his Parole document in his archival file. He enlisted in Grimes co Texas in Texas State Troops for 6 months. He was 40 years old. He was paroled on 11 July 1865. He was a Private and his records state that he was a Musician. He was the husband of my 2nd Cousin 5 x removed [ Sylvania Thomas]

Archibald Cohea enlisted March 13, 1862 at Halletsville, Texas for service in the 4th Texas Company F Mustang Grays. He then made the trip to Virginia where he faought in the battles of Eltham's Landing May 7, 1862 Seven Pines June 1, 1862 (Held in Reserve) Gaines Mill (Turkey Hill)June 27,1862 Malvern Hill July 1, 1862 Second Manassas Aug 16, 1862 Groveton Aug 29, 1862 Turner's Gap - South Mtn. William formed the Grimes County Greys in Anderson, TX and marched to VA. His unit was became Co G. Capt. Hutcheson was killed at the Battle of Gaines Mill.

George was born in Lowndes Co. Mississippi 9 Sept 1838. His family moved to Hempstead, Waller County Texas. He enlisted 25 June 1862 in Anderson [ Grindal ?] Co. Texas. He had several stays in the hospital and served as a recruiter. He and his unit were paroled at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865. He died 16 Feb 1904. He was the Father in Law of my 5th cousin 2 x removed.

Sam enlisted at Montgomery, Texas. He later became a sgt. Was wounded at gaine''s Mill.

Reuben Monroe Talley was born 22 August 1830, Lowndes Co., Alabama, and died 1 July 1905 in Montgomery Co., Texas. On 19 February 1850 in Lowndes Co., Alabama, he married Mary Ellen Jones, b. 26 March 1831, Lowndes Co., Alabama, d. 27 November 1898, Montgomery Co., Texas. Both are buried at New Montgomery Cemetery, Montgomery, Montgomery Co., Texas. Enlisted 15 April 1862 at Montgomery Co., Texas into Hood's Texas Brigade. Wounded and sent to General Hospital No. 9 in Richmond, Virginia, 21 Jan 1865. Signed the Parole of Honor on July 27, 1865 at Houston, Texas. Father of 7 children, two born after the war. The youngest was named, Robert E. Lee Talley, was named after Robert E. Lee. Reuben was stated to have said that if he returned home from the war and had a son, he would name him after Robert E. Lee. Reuben returned home, bare-footed no less, after being wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga.

Born about 1842 in Montgomery Co,Texas. Age 19, enlisted May 7, 1861 (Montgomery Co Texas) as a Private in Company H (Captain Proctor Porter), 4th Infantry Regiment (Texas Volunteers), Texas Brigade. May 6, 1864, received a slight wound in arm during the Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Co VA. June 14, 1864, received a severe wound in the jaw during the defense of Petersburg-Richmond VA. Hospitalized at the Confederate States Hospital in Petersburg and later at the 1st Division's General Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond VA. September 5, 1864, Alexander was furloughed for 60 days to Brandon MS. No further records found at this time.

Charles was born about 1840 in Montgomery Co TX. Age 22, he enlisted March 20, 1862 (Huntsville, Walker Co, Texas) as a Private in Company H (Captain Proctor Porter), 4th Infantry Regiment (Texas Volunteers), Hood's Texas Brigade. Co H Muster record for May/June 1862 shows Charles was in the vicinity of Richmond VA. December 27, 1862, he was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #5, Richmond VA, with an accidental gunshot wound to a foot. March 11, 1863, Charles was furloughed for 60 days for the injured foot. Co H Muster Roll for July/August 1864 notes C.L. Taylor in Texas since 1862, permanently disabled and transferred to the cavalry. Note: He would not have been in Texas until after March 11, 1863, when he went on furlough. Charles L Taylor and Alexander (Alex) Taylor were brothers in Company H.

'Tobe', as he was known, joined Company I 'Navarro Rifles' in July 1861. He never missed a roll call. Was sick on the morning of September 19, 1863 and was told to go to the doctor who would excuse him from duty. Tobe refused and joined his men in formation. That evening a yankee ball shattered his knee. He was taken to a field hospital where the leg was amputated. Tobe was given chloroform to put him to sleep for the surgery. He never woke up and died on September 21st. He was buried on the battlefield. His body was moved when the battlefield became a national park. Now in an unmarked grave in Marietta.

Traveled to Richmond, VA from Porter's Bluff, TX with brother T. J. Sessions on July 19, 1861 to enlist with Co I 4th TX Inf.. Served under Hood and Lee for 2 years and 7 months and lost his brother. Was transferred to the Trans-Mississippi dept. where he served the rest of the war until April 9, 1865. After the war became the first nominee for 'The Peoples Party' in 1888. In Sept.1,1908 was the oldest resident of Navarro Co., TX

Traveled to Richmond, VA from Porter's Bluff, TX with brother Egbert Gallatin Sessions on July 19, 1861 to enlist with Co I 4th TX Inf.. Served under Hood and Lee. Was killed in action.

Wounded at Gettysburg. Commanded the Regiment at Appomattox.

Will was born in 1835 and was around 25 when he joined the army. He got put with the 4 texas regiment. He was promoted to a lieutenant in late 1861. He fought courageously against the yankees trying to take our homeland, but was unfortunately gunned down in June 1862 at the 7 pines battle.

E.J. Williams left behind a wife and 3 year old son to fight in the war. He was killed in the first battle of the 4th Texas at Cold Harbor, VA on June 27, 1862. According to the history, this battle gave General Robert E. Lee his first victory at great cost to the 4th Texas Brigade. The total loss for the Texas Brigade was 571...86 killed (E.J.
