34th Texas Cavalry

William's original service was with the 37th Texas Cavalry. His records indicate 'a regimental return for 34th Texas Cavalry (Terrell's Regiment) on Feb 1864. Detached with horses on Feb 3 1864.

Born 05/19/1833 in Tazewell Co. Virginia to William Price Claytor (b. about 1802 in Bedford Co. Virginia) and Martha N. Robinson (b. about 1807 in Virginia). Thomas Milton Claytor married Martha Wakefield (b. 08/25/1838 in Macon Co. Tennessee on 04/13/1861 in Lewisville, Texas. They had six children. He died 04/13/1915 in Denton, Texas and was buried in Smith Cemetery - Lewisville, Texas. ----- M227 roll 7 (1st Cousin 4 times removed)

Wells' TX Commands Lester, Albert Y.: Enlisted 26 Jun 62 at Ft McCulloch by W.H. Witt for 3 yrs. A PVT in Co'B'/Scanland's Sqd. Paid 30 Sep 62. Muster for 30 Jun 62-30 Jun 63 states on detach. serv. teaming in QM Dept., Bonham, TX, by order of Mj Cabell. In Co'F'/Wells' Rgt. Apr 65 muster states clerk, C.M.S. Dept., Choctaw Nation, 23 Feb 63 by order of Gen Cooper Well’s Texas Cavalry Regiment was organized from remnants of Well’s Cavalry, Good’s TX Cavalry, and Gilletts’ TX Cavalry. This regiment often used the designation 34th Texas Cavalry. It was assigned to the 4th Brigade in Early 1865. (March 6, 1865.)

John's service to both the Confederacy and the Union after the war is a bit different: He was born in Davies County, Missouri in 1840. In 1860 he is 20 years old and living in Fannin County, Texas. The Post office is at Orangeville. He originally joined an irregular unit called the Brush Battalion as a Frontier Guard of which I found two cards in the archives. The group assembled at Oxford, Lake County Tx. in Nov 1863 as Frontier Guards. This evolved into Co E 34th Texas Cavalry [Alexanders]. He has two cards in the archival file. Enlisted 2 Sept 1863 at Bonham for three years, enlisted by Capt. J.B. Russell. The 34th aka 2nd Partisan Rangers organized at Fort Washita, Indian Territory 17 Apr 1862. Commanding Officer [ Almerine M Alexander] Assignment were many April - May 1862 Indian Territory, Trans Miss. Dept. Sept - Dec 1862 Coopers Brigade 1st Corps, Dec 1862 - Jan 1863 Bradfute's Brigade, Roane's Division. Jan - June Dept of Indian Territory. June - Sep Speight's Brigade, Dist. of Western Louisiana. Nov 1863 May 1865 Polignac's Brigade. Dist. of Western La. Battles: Prairie Grove Ark. Newtonia MO. Sterlings Plantation, Red River Campaign, Atchafalaya River, Morgans Ferry La. I find John enlisting in the 2nd US Cavalry on 8 May 1865 at Brozas, Santiago Tx. to fight the Indians. He served until 10 Nov 1865. He applied for a Yankee pension 28 Dec 1891 # 1081405 and Certificate # 811859 and I believe it was granted as his wife Jennie also applied. Both men [same] were from Davies County Missouri and their wife's name was Jennie. He died 24 Feb 1899 in Sherman, Grayson Co Texas. He was the husband of my 3rd cousin 4 x removed.

Was in 34th Texas Cavalry (Alexander Almerines) as well as the 2nd Texas Cavalry. Name spelled with one 'm' or two 'mm's. Enlisted in Waco according to his obituary. Also pictured under banner of Wallers Company C, Tom Green Brigade, group photo,at the 1902 reunion at Dallas. Was a resident of Neosho, MO at the time. (incorrectly spelled Neosha by the newspaper). Obit states he was at Prairie Grove, Iuka, Corinth, Black River. Newtonia, MO as well, I believe. Started out as cavalry, but later dismounted to serve as infantry.

Britton was my great grand uncle. His family came to Texas from East Tennessee in 1860. He was with the unit from its organization at Ft. Washita until they returned from Arkansas in February 1862. He does not appear to have rejoined the unit when it went south to Louisiana, he and his cousin Simeon were given sick leave.
