Discharged from the US Army dated 2 Oct. 1855 at Fort Duncan ( Eagle Pass Texas). He had been in service under Captain George Wallace's Company, First (Illinois) Regiment of Infantry. He participated in a number of Indian Battles. He had been a weaver by trade in Coventry, Warwickshire, England. He served as a Sergeant in the Confederate Army during the Civil War 1862-1865 was attached to B company,33rd Texas Cavalry, and participated in The Battle of the Nueces.

He was born 19th Feb.,1825 and died 30th Jan.,1901. He enlisted with the 33rd Regiment,Texas Cavalry, 9th May 1864. The 33rd Regiment, Texas Cavalry, was organized in April, 1863, by using Duff's Partisan Rangers, 14th Battalion, Texas Cavalry, as its nucleus. Its members were recruited at San Antonio-Bexar County, Port Lavaca-Calhoun County, Mt. Vernon-Franklin County, and in Kaufman County. This unit served in Gano's and Hardeman's Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department, and was active along the lower Rio Grande.

Brother of Robert P. Baker-- J. C. Baker (same as Joseph Crawford) applied for and received a pension for services in the Confederate Army. He could not give the date he entered the Army, stating 'three years till close of War.' He stated that he served in Company G, 33rd Texas Cavalry. In the index to Confederate Services, there was a Joseph Baker in this Company. His services records were typed, most were hand written. This record reads: Baker, Joseph Co., G, 33 Tex Cav. (Duff's Partisan Rangers 14 Batt'n Cav) (Confederate) Pvt Inside the envelope is one card (typed) Joseph Baker Pvt., Co, G 33 ?Tex Cav Reg'm. Name appears on a Parole of Prisoners of War at Columbus, Texas 27 July 1865-- He had to swear to a typed statement that he would not participate in the War again. Residence: Gonzales, Texas-- To further confuse the issue, in order to secure his pension, J.C. Baker had to get statements form two people attesting to his proof of service. One such statement was made by R. G. Rawls in Tyler Co., TX on 1 August 1914. Rawls swore that he had known J. C. Baker for 60 years and that they served together for 2 years during the war in Co. G, 33rd Texas Cav. Confederate records on file in the National Archives indicate that R. G. Rawls served in Co. D, 11 (Spaight's) Batt'n Texas Vols. Formerly designated as 6th (Liken's) Battn Texas Infantry.-- Joseph C. Baker was discharged from Co. I, 13th Texas Cavalry on 24 May 62 because of the new conscription act passed by the Confederate Congress in April 62, that exempted from service all men under 18 and over 35. Joseph is listed on the March muster as 15 years old. He had enlisted in Orange Co., TX on 1 Mar 62. He was discharged at Camp Burnett, near Porter's Springs, Houston County, Texas when the regiment was reorganized to comply with the new law. The age requirements were ignored later in the war when Joseph joined the 33rd Texas Cavalry.

Remarks: sick in hospital May & June 1863 Remarks: sick furlough Absent enlisted men accounted for: Absent sick at home. Furloughed by Board of Physicians.

Bartholomew was born 3 May 1839 in District #2 Henry, Kentucky. He died Sept 1888 in Edna, Jackson Co. Texas. He was 23 years old when joined on 10 Mar 1862 as a Pvt. Capt John T Breckenridge's Co Partisan Rangers 14th Battn: Vols. attached to Shea's Battn: Vols. Enlisted at Texana & mustered 9 April 1862 at camp Esparanza by Major D.D. Shea. This became Co K Duff's Regiment / Sharp's Battalion. About July 1862 he developed kidney problems and it grew worse. He was given a Certificate of Disability re: Kidney disease while stationed at Station Indianola, Texas dated 8 August 1862. He is the father in law of husband of my 5th cousin 3 x removed..
