30th Texas Cavalry

30th Texas originated as Gurley's Regiment, was recruited in the Waco and central Texas area and was orignally designated the 1st Regiment Texas Partisan Rangers. It was organized by wealthy Waco lawyer Edward J. Gurley. Lt. Col. Battle was a District Judge in Waco and was again appointed as a District Judge after the war during the term of Gov. Coke. Col. Battle's son, Thomas Elbridge Battle at age 15, followed his father into the unit and served as a private.

Thomas Elbridge Battle followed his father, Lt. Col. Nicolas W. Battle into the 30th Texas Cavalry. Thomas Battle was only 14 years old when the unit was officially mustered in on August 18, 1862. Family information indicates that he joined his father's unit at age 15.

older brother of my g-grandfather. Would like more info if anyone has it. Andrew was in Polk County census in 1860, but was in Robertson Co. 1880 census.

Adam J Mensch was born in Knox County, Indiana on May 28, 1843. His parents were John and Annie (Morris) Mensch. Adam, his parents and siblings moved to McLennan County, TX, before the war. Adam was a Private in the 30th Regiment Texas Cavalry (Gurley's) (1st Texas Partisan Rangers) Later, after the war, he and his family moved to Washington County, Arkansas. He died in 1907.

On Oct 14th, 1862, he was commissioned a 2nd Lt in Co.A, 30th Texas Cavalry, known as Gurley's Regiment of Texas Partisans. The 30th Texas Cavalry was organized during the summer of 1862 at Waco, TX. The unit was one of three Texas units known as the First Texas Partisan Rangers. The 30th Texas Cavalry was assigned to the Trans Mississippi Department and their first engagement was at Galveston, TX on 1 Jan 1863. From there they moved north to the Indian Territory where they were in action in May at Fort Gibson and in August at Perryville, Indian Territory. In March and April 1864 the 30th Texas Cavalry was engaged in operations in and around Roseville, Arkansas against Steele's Expedition from Little Rock. During the spring and summer of 1864 they were involved in numerous actions in Arkansas and then in September returned to the Indian Territory where they remained until late in 1864. From there they were ordered to Shreveport, LA where they remained until the following spring. In April 1865 the unit was moved to Austin, TX where it was disbanded in mid May 1865 when the news of the collapse of the eastern Confederacy reached Texas.

Berry enlisted 1 July 1862 at Waco, Texas, by Capt. O.J. Downs for three years or the war into Gurley's Regiment 1st Texas Partisans. It was 40 miles to Rendezuous. His horse is valued at $150.00 and equipment $25.00. Musters in at Camp McCullock. This unit becomes Co. C 30th Regiment,Texas Cavalry. There are only three cards in his file. The last card shows he took the oath [ swallowed the yellow dog ] 15 April 1865. Note* Berrys records show him as Berry Bounds.

Vincent & older brother William fought in the 30th Texas Calvery also none as the 1st Texas Partisan Rangers. And also none as Gurley Calvery. Vincent later became a sherif in Texas after the war.

Buried in Mattox Cemetery in Upsher County Texas. His young brother Vincent fought in the same unit.

I'm still researching.He was my great great grandfather.Seeking rank and dates of service.

My GG Grandfather served in the 30th Cavlery Co G Texas Regement. He was shot in the back with an arrow at one of the battles and was paralized from the waist down due to an arrow head being too close to the spine to be removed. He died with the arrow head still in his back. He was from Erath Co. but I think he joined in Bosque Co.(Not sure} He served under Ford and has his name in the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame in Waco.
