24th Texas Cavalry

This unit was also known as Wilkes Cavalry and 2nd Texas Lancers. Were dismounted and sent to Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, Arkansas. On January 11, 1863, they were captured and held prisoners of war at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois. Many prisoners reportedly died there of illness before the exchange took place in Richmond, Virginia, April 18, 1863. DOB April 8, 1845-Mississippi; DOD July 6, 1901-Houston, Texas; Married Susan N. George February 10, 1866 in Austin, Texas with whom he had 7 children

Enlisted as a Private on 29 March 1862. Mustered in on 28 April 1862. Captured at Fort Hindman, AR on 11 January 1863. Sent to Gratiot Street Prison at St. Louis, MO on 12 February 1863. Died while a prisoner on 13 March 1863 at St. Louis, MO. Buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

william owens enlisted at the age of forty seven in lampassas, tx, he travelled over 120 miles to camp hempstead, where he learned in the school of the soldier. his regiment started out as horse mounted cavalry untill they were ordered to dismount, because of lack of fodder for thier horses. he was with the regiment untill, they were all captured at arkansas post on the arkansas river in february of 1863, they were shipped north on river boats to springfield, ill. where he was imprissoned at camp butler after a little stay at gratiot street prison in st. louis, mo. he stayed at camp butler untill he was sent to be exchanged in virginia in april of 1864. his record states nothing of him finishing out his service with the 24th tx cav, but he did survive the war, and was alive in at least 1888 in lampasass, tx where he made a property transaction, but, nothing has been found of him since, and we do not know where he is buried.

Only two cards on file for J.K. Pankey. His card lists Co. D, 24th Texas Cavalry, [ Wilkes' Regt.], 2nd Texas Lancers, 2nd Carter's Brigade. Became Co I Grabbury's Consolidated Texas Brigade about 9 April 1865. J.K. appears on a list of prisoners surrendered to Brig. Gen. E.M. McCook by Maj. Gen. Sam Jones, C.S.A. at Tallahassee, Florida 10 May. 1865.

John was 28 years old when he joined Capt. P. H. Swearingen's Company 2nd Regt Carters Brigade Texas Lancers at Brenham, on 20 Jan 1862 for the war. Several of his family also joined. He mustered in at Hemstead on 24 April at Camp Carter. This unit is also known as Capt. Matthews Company. His horse is valued at $200.00 and his equipment at $150.00. His rendezvous is 150 miles away. Apperas on a roll of POW's captured at Ark. Post 11 Jan 1863. Sent to Camp Butler in Springfield, Ill and paroled [no date of parole] Surrendered at Tallahasse Fl. 22 May 1865. This unit becomes Co I Granbury's Consolidated Texas Brigade about 9 April 1865 shortly before it was surrendered.

Jesse Was born in Walton Co. Georgia 16 April 1835 He enlisted 20 Jan 1862 at Jasper, Texas in Capt J. T. Morrison's Co aka Texas Lancers, aka 2nd Carters Brigade. This became Co E 24th Texas Cavalry [Wilkes]. Mustered at Camp Carter, Hempstead, Texas as 5th Sgt. His horse is valued at $150 and equipment $65. It is 160 miles to the rendezvous. He has 6 cards in his archival record On 9 April 1865 when consolidated it became Co I Granbury's consolidated Brigade. It surrendered at Goldsboro NC 28 April 1865. His unit participated in some 35 battles including: Arkansas Post where they fought as dismounted cavalry, Captured and sent to Camp Butler near Springfield, Ill. Many died of the cold and disease. Battles Cont: Liberty Gap, Chickamuga, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Ringgold Gap, Atlanta Campaign, Franklin, Nashville, Carolina Campaign including Bentonville. He died 25 May at Mineral Springs,Jasper Co. Texas and is buried in the city cemetery.. We are related by marriage.

Isaiah / Issac W Gandy was from Jasper Co. Texas. He has 16 cards in his archival file. He is 19 years old when he joins Capt.. J. T. Morrison's Co. 2nd Regt. Texas Lancers, aka Wilke's 2nd Regt. Texas Lancers.& as some point Carters Brigade. Enlisted In Jasper Co.Tx. on 21 Dec. 1861. It is 160 miles to rendezvous, his horse is valued at $140.00 and equipment $16,00. Captured at Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, Ark on 31 Jan 1863. Taken to Camp Butler Ill. and exchanged, Rejoined his unit which was finally surrendered at Greensboro, NC on 28 April 1865. His unit then was a consolidated affair of A thur K companies known as Co I Granberry's consolidated Brigade.

Nathaniel enlisted in Capt. J. T. Morrison's Co. 2nd Lancers, which became Co E 24th Texas Cavalry Wilkes' Regiment, Carters Brigade. This unit became Co I Granberry's Consolidated Brigade at about 9 April 1865. Enlisted 21 Dec. 1861 at Jasper, Texas. He was captured 11 Jan 1863 at Arkansas Post, Ark. and sent to Camp Butler In Springfield Illinois. Paroled. He died in the hospital in 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. He was 27 years old. He was the 1st husband of my 2nd Cousin 4 x removed.

1842 – 1864. Enlisted on Dec 21, 1861 and mustered in on Jan 18, 1862 for the period of the war at the age of 20 in Captain J. T. Morrisons Company, 2nd Regiment Texas Lancers. He was paid 300.00 for his horse and another $95.00 for his equipment. Around Mar to Aug 1862 his regiment became part of the 24th Regiment Texas Cavalry. It appears he was wounded during the battle of Peachtree on July 20, 1864 and taken home to Texas to recover. Joseph was 28 years old when he joined for duty 1 April 1862 at Colorado, Texas. He was enrolled by J. H. Conner for the war. It was 60 miles to rendezvous. His horse is valued at $175.00 and his equipment at $35.00. He is a Pvt. in Capt. John H. Conner's Company 2nd Regt. Carter's Brigade. Joseph's brother J.V. is in Co D. of this unit. He is also on a list of POW's captured at Fort Hindman, Ark. Post Ark. on 11 Jan. 1863.
