15th Texas Cavalry

Thomas was captured at Arkansas post Fort Hindman and taken to Chicagos Camp Douglas 80 acres of hell. There he died less than one month later. Buried in mass grave in Oak park Cemetery. He was 18 years old. He was also a 2nd cousin to Zachery Taylor and son of Francis Edlow (Frank) (1818 - 1903)and Mary Richardson Wells Taylor of Decatur Texas. He was born in Kentucky in 1845. Moved to Texas 1857 and died Feb 1863. Inlisted Feb. 1862 Fort McKinny Texas. He was my mothers (Helen Taylor No. 22, 1923 - Oct. 15th 1998) Fathers (Paul Embry Taylor 1897-1961) Uncle. Edward was born 18 Feb 1824 in Rock Springs, Putnam Co. Tennessee. In 1860 he is in Texas. He has 11 cards in his archival file. He enlisted at age 38 at San Antonio in Capt. George H Sweet's Co. 15th Texas Cavalry [ Johnson's Brigade] Horse value $140, equipment at $30. and firearm $75. This unit thru consolidation became combined with the 17th & 18th Texas Cavalry aka Co F Granbury's Consolidated Brigade and finally Co H 17th Consolidated Texas Dismounted Cavalry. He fought at Batesville, Ark on 8 July 1862 and on 24 July 1862 the horses were sent away and they became dismounted. The last CMR dated 31 Dec - 30 June 1863 states that he is absent West of the Mississippi. It is suggested that he was captured. He survived the war and died 28 Feb 1902 at Liberty Hill, Williamson County, Texas and is buried beside his wife Melvina Jane Draper is the aforesaid town cemetery.

Born in Alabama in 1835. Enlisted in Dallas, Texas on 1 Jan. 1862. Died in the Little Rock, Arkansas hospital on 8 June 1862.

Thornton Cozart (aka Cozort) came from E. Tennessee. A relative, Henderson Cozart (aka Cozort), also from E TN, lost his life at the infamous Goliad Massacre in 1836. Following Texas' victory, other Cozarts/Cozorts migrated to Texas, settling mainly in North-Central Texas, esp. Hunt and Leon Counties. There is a poignant 1864 correspondence between the ailing Thornton and his pregnant wife, Mary Ann Bowen Cozart, with Thornton asking his wife to come to visit him at the CSA hospital at Tyler, TX and take him home. Even though she is very far along with twins, she makes the 60-mile rough trip on horseback in mid-summer. Sadly, Thornton dies before she gets there. She buries her husband and returns to their rural home at Blackjack Grove but in mid-August dies herself in childbirth, along with the newborn twins. Use a good search engine and type in Thornton Cozart to find the documents of the incident. Thornton died about a month before the 15th TX Cavalry assumed temporary guard duty at the Camp Ford military prison. Early in the war he apparently escaped and survived the capture of the 15th at Arkansas Post. There are records showing that Thornton as a civilian provided material assistance and transport services to the Confederacy up to about mid-1863. He may have joined the CSA cavalry in Texas in 1863. He did not serve with the portions of the 15th that fought east of the Mississippi during the Atlanta Campaign and elsewhere. His C.O. was Capt. Flavius Josephus Barret(t), who was captured at Arkansas Post and was exchanged, sent back to Texas to recruit, and apparently took over some of the remnant 15th's duties. Barrett was C.O. of Company B of the 15th; hence Thornton must have been in Co. B.

Organization : Organized at McKinney in early 1862. Dismounted in April 1862. Surrendered at Arkansas Post on 11 January 1863; Exchanged in April 1863. Field consolidation with the 6th and 10th infantry regiments from July 1863 to 09 April 1865.The 10th Infantry Regiment was detached from this field consolidation between January to April 1864. Consolidated with the 6th, 7th and 10th Infantry Regiments and the 17th,18th,24th and 25th Cavalry Regiments { Dismounted } and designated as the 1st Infantry Regiment Consolidated at Smithfield, North Carolina on 09 April 1865. I know that my Grandfather, Dewitt Clinton Watson,used to tell me stories of 'Grandpaw' Watson. I have pictures of his gravemarker from Johnson Station Cemetary which is located south of Arlington. I have his picture and also a double barrell shotgun, branding iron, a running iron and his anvil. Any other information would be appreciated

He later in the War was mustered out of the CS Army in order to haul frieght from Mexico through South Texas to supply the Confederacy. He had a Freight Business before the War in Texas near Belton.

James has but one source for his service, M227-roll 17 lists him as a Pvt. in Co F 15th Texas cavalry. I have found no other record. He was about 33 when he entered. He was born in Washington Co. Alabama 8 Dec. 1827 and died in 1880 in Austin, Travis Co. Texas. He is my 2nd cousin 4 x removed

Died as prisoner or in hospital at Camp Douglas, Illinois, and buried Oak Woods Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois, in mass grave of confederate soldiers. There is a memorial there listing names of Confederate soldiers who are buried there. Carol Roberts 7/22/2013
