Borrowed from 10th Texas Cav page: Enlisted in Captain HDE Redwine''s Company, Locke''s Reg''t Texas Volunteers, age 35, in Taos, Texas, on September 25th 1861. Horse worth $125, equipment $25. April 15th 1862, the 10th is ordered dismounted. Transferred to Co D, 14th Texas Cav (dismounted), Army of Tennessee 30th July 1863. John''s unit was part of Ector''s Brigade, and fought gallantly at Murfreesborough, Chickamauga, the defence of Atlanta, Franklin, Nashville, and in many other places. It was surrendered at Meridian, Alabama, by Lt Gen Richard Taylor, 4th May 1865. John Nelson was one of the handful (of the original 900) to survive the war. His wife is believed to have died during the CW, and he subsequently remarried. Sometime around the mid 1880s he left Texas for Arizona, and died there in 1893. 2025 update: My 3x Great Grandfather. John served in K Co, 1st Tennessee Volunteers in the Mexican War. His only brother Andrew M Nelson was killed defending the Alamo in 1836. His father was a Corporal in the TN Militia in the Creek War. John's grandfather John was a Major in the North Carolina Continental line: 1st and 4th regiments. Transferred to D Co, 14th Texas Cav in Jun/Jul 1864. Military service records complete from enlistment in 1861 through October 1864. Major battles listed as present include Corinth, Richmond (KY), Murfreesboro, Jackson 1863, Chickamauga, Meridian Campaign. Listed in the (Texas) Confederate Indigent Families List (1863-1865) of March 1, 1864. He is no longer listed in the Feb, 19 1865 final version. Cannot find any hospital or POW records for end of war narrative. His mother died in 1862 and wife died in June 1864 while away at war. John died in 1893 in Globe, AZ survived by several children and wife. Newspaper articles of the time indicate he owned or operated a mine there. His wife Jane filed a Mexican War pension application in El Paso, Texas after his death. Page 178 – Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray, 1861–1865. Story from John Wesley Davis: Most of our men were armed with shotguns and squirrel rifles. I had traded for a Mississippi rifle, and when the Colonel called for two men from each company who were well armed, John McNelson and I were sent from our company. We reported to headquarters and found about a hundred men. Col. Young of the Ninth Texas was in command. We “put out” I didn’t know where, but when daylight came we were on a little stream called Stinking River and the Bushwhackers were shooting at us from the cliffs above us. We picked up a negro who told us where ninety-six mules and twenty-four wagons were, and we started up the river to get them. The wagons were loaded with all kinds of provisions and were guarded by 400 Yankees who were trying to get to Burnside at Cumberland Gap. We soon found the object of our pursuit and the battle opened. When the smoke had cleared away we had the ninety-six mules and twenty-four wagons and, the boys said, 300 dead Yankees. I did not count them. Such was our life for three months in Kentucky.

Born 22 May 1844 in Montgomery Co., Alabama. Enlisted 2 Jan 1862 at Henderson, Texas. Died in 1916 in Longview, Texas.

F.P Duffy (listed in roster as Francis P Duffy (first name was actually Florence. Originally from Butts County Georgia moved to Upshur County Texas 1861. Died at Columbus, Miss on June 5, 1862 from Typhoid fever.
