8th Texas Cavalry

Angy Price Blalock, Enlisted August 1863 and served until June 1865. Terry's Scouts, Wharton Headquarters Cavalry Scout from February 1864 to June 1865. Younger brother of my Gr-Gr Grandfather Charles Stewart Blalock who served in the 17th Texas Cavalry.

William was born 15 Jul 1840 and married Elizabeth Betty [Mankins]. John Mankins who was Williams best friend made him promise to marry and take of his wife. John was KIA in 1860. William is buried in Williamson Co, TX

Born 1839, died 1924, served as a Private in two Confederate Cavalry Regiments as follows: 1st Regiment, Texas Cavalry (McCulloch's) (1st Mounted Riflemen) and 8th Battalion, Texas Cavalry (Taylor's Battalion, Mounted Rifles).1st Regiment, Texas Cavalry (McCulloch's) (1st Mounted Riflemen) 1st (McCulloch's) Regiment Mounted Rifles was organized with about 1,000 men in May, 1861, and served in the Department of Texas on the frontier. In April, 1862, the unit was reduced to five companies and redesigned the 8th Texas Cavalry Battalion. Its commanders were Colonel Henry E. McCulloch, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas C. Frost, and Majors James B. Barry and Ed. Burleson.

He mustered into Confederate service in September 1861. He fought at Woodsonville,Shilo,Perryville,Murfreesboro, Chickamauga. He was wounded severely at the batle of Farmington and left in a private home. No acount as to any futher service can be found. He returned to Texas (Milam,Co.) and was a farmer. He died in 1904.

William was born in 1845 in Lowndes Co. Miss. in 1849 his family moved to Texas. He would have been about 15 in 1860. I have not found his archival records, but He has a CSA application for a gravestone, and it was installed at Phillip's Cem. Dripping Springs, Hays Co. Texas. He became a successful businessman and a pillow of the community. His obit is lengthy and makes reference twice to him having served in the 8th Texas Regiment of Cavalry - Terrys. He died 14 Nov 1935 in Austin, Travis Co. Tx. He was the father-in-law of my 2nd cousin 4 x removed.

The eldest son of Leonard W. and Courtney Ann Fulton Groce, Fulton was born at the Bernardo Plantation in Grimes County, Texas November 8, 1832. He was educated at the Western Military Institute of Kentucky. In 1855 he married Asenath Jackson and they had two children before he enlisted in Company B of Terry's Texas Rangers. After the war Fulton returned to Waller County (which was part of Austin County at the time), Texas where he died December 14, 1883

Jared was born in Texas May 28, 1837 the son of Jared Ellison and Mary Ann Calvit Groce. He enlisted in Terry's Texas Rangers and served as an officer on the staff of his cousin General John Austin Wharton. He attained the rank of Assistant Inspector General. He returned home and married in 1868 and died July 22, 1872.

Leonard Waller Groce Jr. was the son of L. W. and Courtney Ann Fulton Groce. Born at the Bernardo Plantation in Grimes County, Texas he enlisted with brothers and numerous cousins in Terry's Texas Rangers. He studied to become a physican in New Orleans and was a physican for the Central Railroad after the war. He married and raised a family in Waller County, Texas and died at Hempstead July 6, 1901.

Andrew was born 25 Oct 1838 in Jefferson, Rutledge Co. Tenn. The 1860 census finds him at 21 y/o in Washington County. Texas. He has 6 items in his archival file. He enlisted 12 Mar 1862 at Houston, Texas, sworn in by Capt. Sparks. He served until the end of the war. This regiment called Terrys Rangers was engaged in 275 engagements and skirmishes in 7 states under General Braxton Bragg and Gen. Albert Sidney Johnson. His wife filed for a CSA pension which was approved 31 Aug 1910. He died 25 Feb 1896 and is buried in Conroe, Montgomery Co. Texas.

Andrew Jackson was the second son of Abner and Margaret Inabinet Strobel Jackson. He was born in 1840 in South Carolina. He enlisted with his brothers in 1861 in Terry's Texas Rangers but was discharged in 1862 in Woodburn, Kentucky. His father's death kept him home through 1863. However he reenlisted and at the probate of his will it was stated that he was not seen after May 7, 1865. It is unknown if he traveled to Mexico with some of his unit and died there or lost his life traveling back to Texas after the surrender.

John was the eldest son of Abner and Margaret Inabinet Strobel Jackson. He was born in South Carolina in 1838 and as a young man attended Norwich Military Institude with his half brother Louis Strobel. He enlisted September 7, 1861 in Terry's Texas Rangers but was discharged December 29, 1861 in Nashville, Tennessee because of chronic diarhea. Both his parents had died and he spent the next years sorting out the estates with the help of his brothers. A dispute between John and his brother George brought about his death December 16, 1868 at the Lake Jackson Plantation in Brazoria County, Texas.

Though John Wharton was born in Nashville, Tennessee July 3, 1828 his family already had a long and proud association with the state of Texas. He was the son of William Harris and Sarah Ann Groce Wharton. He attended College in South Carolina and read law with ex-governor David Johnson and married Governor Johnson's daughter Eliza in 1848. The young couple established their home in Texas. He joined Terry's Texas Rangers in 1861 with the rank of Colonel but by the end of the war had attained the rank of Brigader General. He was murdered April 6, 1865 in Galveston by Colonel George Baylor during a dispute about an inferred insult to Baylor. Wharton was not carrying a gun at the time, however Baylor was tried and released.

1836-1928 Enlisted at Houston on 7 Sept 1861. Promoted to Sergeant on 14 Dec 1861. Captured at the Battle of Murfreesboro on 31 Dec 1862. Paroled and exchanged at City Point, Virginia on 4 April 1863 after spending three months imprisoned in Camp Douglas. Buried in the Hill Family Cemetery in Bastrop County.

1841-1895 Enlisted in Houston on 7 Sept 1861. Captured on 25 Aug 1863 in Cowan, Tennessee. Buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.

1834-1921 Enlisted as a Private at Corinth, Mississippi on 15 April 1862. Buried in the Hill Family Cemetery in Bastrop County.

Woods S. Miller, age 17, Bastrop, TX, joined Terry's Texas Rangers, Co D, in September 1861.

Resided TX. Enlisted 27 Jan 1862 at Johnson Station; Pvt. served in Brinson's Co. D, Sim's Reg't 8th TX Cav; Discharged 16 Jul 1862 for age (over 35)

Benjamin enlisted at Houston Tx. as a Pvt. in Capt. L. M. Rayburn's Co. Texas Vols. It's 160 miles to rendezvous. The value of his horse is not given but his equipment is valued at $20.00. His CSA CMR card lists his units as Terry's Regiment, 1st Tx. Rangers and 8th Tx. Rangers. His Obit stares he fought at Shiloh, Chattaunoga and Stone's River at Murfreesbourgh Tenn. He was wounded and captured at Stone River and sent to Camp Douglas, Chicago Ill. then on to City Point,Va. arriving on 4 April 1863. He was exchanged and reentered the fight.

Henry Brown born 4-18-1833 in Herkimer County NY moved to Texas in 1852. He joined Terry's Texas Rangers in 1861. Suffered chest and shoulder wounds near Triune, TN on December 27, 1862. Present in February 1864. Married Mary E. Corder of Shelby County, TX on December 15, 1867.

William E. McClellan was first elected Lt but resigned and served as a Pvt. He was in the following battles, Woodsonville, Ky 1861,Shiloh 1861, Murfreesboro Raid 1862, Wheelers TN Raid, 1863, Chickamauga 1863, Atlanta Campaign & Seige 1864, Carolinas Campaign, Bentonville, NC 1865. His death was caused by a fall from a house he was building for his dau. He is buried in FayetteCounty, Texas.

Louis was born in South Carolina September 16, 1831 the son of John and Margaret Inabinet Strobel. After his father's death and his mother's remarriage to Abner Jackson Louis traveled with his family to Texas. In 1850 he was a cadet at the Norwich Military Institute. He married in 1852. He raised a company of Terry's Texas Rangers and served with them until 1862 when he was called home to assist in arranging the affairs of the family on the death of his step-father. In 1863 he re-enlisted in the 3rd Regiment Texas Cavalry State Troops. After the war he went to Mexico with numerous other disenfranchised soldiers, but he and his family returned to Brazoria County, Texas after a few years. Louis died Febuary 9, 1869 and is buried at the Lake Jackson Plantation.

Charles S. Kemp is my G.G Grandfather. He fought for Terry's Texas Rangers during the Civil War and is buried in the Texas State Cemetery.

Mustered into Company H in spring 1862; Hospitalized from April 1862 to June 1862 at Reinzi, MS; Paroled at Montgomery, AL on May 31, 1865. He was one of 7 brothers who fought for the CSA; 3 of those brothers died during the war; one from illness in 1864 and the other 2 from wounds in battle.

Alexander states he left the unit in December 1861; Returned home to Texas in March 1862; Died on July 4, 1864, due to consumption. John D. Alexander had 6 other brothers who fought for the CSA during the War. Two of his brothers died in battle - one at Iuka and one at Pickett's Mill.

1832-1881 Enlisted as a Private in Company D at Houston on 7 Sept 1861. Appointed assistant surgeon of the regiment on 8 Oct 1861. He was a practicing MD for over twenty years in Bastrop County where he is buried in the Hill family cemetery just north of Smithville.
