Born in Kentucky abt 1828. Son of John Fisher Land & Rebecca Cosby. Grandson of John Land & Elizabeth Barlow. Enlisted 8,Aug.1861 at Colorado County,Tx. Mustered at San Antonio,Tx.29,Aug.1861.Appears on a list of Confederates captured & paroled during the New Mexcio Campaign of 1862.On a list of wounded at Donaldsonville,La. 28,June 1863.

Martin was 21 years old when he enlisted in Colorado County for the war. Enlisted by Capt. J.S. Shopshire. He was mustered in at San Antonio, Texas on 29 Aug. 1861. His horse was valued at $150.00 and his his equipment at $15.00. This company was successively designated as Capt. Shopshire's Co. , Capt. Wells' Co. and Co. A 5th Regiment Texas Cavalry. The 5th was organized with 10 companies A thru K, which was mustered in from 4 to 26th Oct. 1861. It was also known as the 2nd Sibley's Brigade Texas Mounted Volunteers and as teh 5th Mounted Vol's.

William Joined on 19 August at San Antonio and mustered in on 31 August for the war. He is 24 years old and it is 200 miles to his rendezvous. His horse is valued at $75.00 and his equipment at $45.00. He is appointed 2nd Sergt. on 3 June 1862. His unit is captured at Vermillion Bayou on 25 Nov. 1863. He is confined in the Customs House and sent to New Iberia for exchange. He rode with 3rd Corps Capt. Denman W Shannon's Company and 2nd Regiment Sibley's Brigade Texas Mounted Vol's. This ends the archival information. William is the husband of my cousin Nancy Covington 4x removed.

Enlisted in Martin's Regiment. Co. I, 5th Texas Partisan Rangers, July 1862 per widow's pension application. War department records have S.P. Lunsford enlisted March 6, 1862 in Co. B, Gano's Squadron, Texas Cav. C.S.A. at Witt Mill, Dallas County, Texas. The squadron was assigned to the 7th Ky. Cav, Summer of 1862, as Cos. A & B.
