John was 23 years old when he joined as a Pvt. Capt. James Walker's Company 2nd Regiment Texas Mounted Rifles. He enlisted on 19 April, 1861 at Hallettsville, Lavaca County Texas. They mustered in at San Antonio Tx. on 23 May 1861. His horse was valued at $50.00 and equipment at $20.00. A remark on his CSA CMR card: He lost his pistol in action. It was valued at $20.00..... He survived the war and died 3 April 1917 in Koreth, Lavaca Co. Texas where he is buried beside his wife Catherine Schulte... John's mother, Sophia Pankey was my 2nd Great Grand Aunt.

John was born in 1841 in Marshall Count Alabama. The 1860 census finds him at age 18 in Lavaca, Lavaca County Texas. The Post Office is at Hallettsville. He has 7 items in his archival file. He enlists at Hallettsville on 15 April 1861 in Co D 2nd Regt. Tx Cavalry Capt. James Walker's Co aka Capt. George L Patrick's Co. [Arizona Brigade] His horse is valued at $65 and equipment at $18. It is 125 miles to rendezvous at San Antonia where they mustered 23 March. 1 Julu 1861 he is on extra duty as a Herder. A CMR July 1861 states he is wounded and left at the hospital at Fort Bliss. He is now in Capt. Patrick's Company. The last CMR states that the died 1 June 1862 at a General Hospital of Dysentery. It is assumed the hospital was in Texas. His burial details are unknown. He was the 3rd cousin of wife of my 2nd cousin 3 x removed. Blood is very thin but still kin.

Enlisted 15 April, 1861, at San Antonio, was one of the 14-man patrol under the command of Lieut. Reuben Hays, who rode out of Ft. Davis to engage Chief Nicolas and his Mescalero Apaches who had been raiding throughout the area. When found the Apaches were some 80 in number, and the outcome was never in doubt. After a protracted running gun battle, Lt. Mays and his men were all killed, save one Mexican scout who managed to slip away unseen. Perkins was a grgrgr-uncle, brother to my grgrgr-grandfather.

Dr. James C. Walker of Hallettsville, TX organized Co. D of the 2nd Texas Mounted Volunteers (aka 2nd Texas Cavalry) on 15 April 1861. They were mustered into service in San Antonio on 19 April 1861, and James Walker was elected the Company's Captain. They participated in the Baylor and Sibley Expeditions in New Mexico. After they returned in 1862, Capt. Walker was elected Lt. Col., replacing Lt. Col. Baylor.
