1st Texas Cavalry

Company unknown at this time.

Born in Georgia, living in Tyler County, Texas when he enlisted. Died of yellow fever in New Orleans, Louisiana, burial location is unknown.

At the age of 17, he enlisted early in 1864 in what was known as the Texas Frontier regiment. His official record says McCord's Frontier Regiment. I am told that the 1st Cavalry was the predecessor to this unit. McCord's was also known as the 46th Texas Cavalry. His command was ordered south and did duty to the mouth of the Brazos river until the close of the war. He was made sergeant major of his regiment and often acted as adjutant. He was the youngest of 7 brothers who fought for the CSA. Three of those brothers died during the war - one from illness contracted during the war and two from wounds.

My GG Grandfather was a 1st Lt. in Co B, W.P. Lane's 1st Texas Partisan Rangers. He was born 6 Jan 1837 in Tennessee and died 10 April 1896. He is buried at Youngblood Cemetery in Panola County, Texas

Gilbert was a nephew of Thornton E. Cozart; both were from Madison Co., TN. Gilbert apparently served in the 1st Texas Cavalry Battalion, and also the 32nd Texas (Crump's BTLN) Cavalry, and his uncle's 15th Texas Cavalry. Gilbert survived the War and returned to claim and manage family land in Madison Co. His brother Newton served in Co. I of the 6th Tennessee (CSA)Infantry and may have been K.I.A. in 1864; his brother Jasper apparently started out in the CSA unit Brooks' Battalion, but switched to the Union's 6th TN Cavalry. Another brother James MAY be the James Cozart/Cozort/Chozart who was also in the 1st Texas Cav BTLN and the 15th Texas Cavalry.

Walker was born in Madison County, Georgia in 1822. He is 38 years old on the 1860 census and is in the Western District of Milam County, Texas He enlisted in April 1861 in the 1st Texas Mounted Rifles at Willow Springs, the CO is Col. Henry Eustace McCulloch. This becomes Co B 1st Cavalry Regt. This unit is transferred to the CSA. Other officers are H.P. Hale, who is the mustering officer. Major Sam A. Easly, A.B. Davis & J.W. Moore. Walker's horse is valued at $400 and his equipment at $75. It is soon disbanded and becomes part of the 8th Tx Regiment and in May of 1862 it is consolidated with the 3rd Tx. Cavalry to form the [New] 1st Tx Cav under the command of Augustus Buchel who died in the Red River Campaign at the battle of Pleasant Hill. He was replaced by William Overall Yager. Walker died in 1898 in Gause, Milam Co. Texas and is buried in the Pin Oak Cem. in that county.

James Cozart/Cozort/Chozart was in Cos. D and C of the 1st Texas Cavalry Battalion and the 15th Texas Cavalry. His brother Gilbert shared two of those units; his uncle Thornton E. was in the 15th Cav. If this James is indeed Gilbert's brother, he was from Madison Co., TN and may have moved to Texas not long before the War broke out. His name may have been Joshua James. He survived the war. At one point, he may have been moved into an Engineer's company. His brother Jasper (aka Jasper Joseph?) started out in the CSA but switched to a Union unit in Tennessee.

Jesse has only 5 cards in his archival file. He enlisted first in 1st Regiment Yager's Mounted Rifles. Enrolled by Lieut.Phillips for the war. Mustered in at Camp McCulloch, Tx. on 5 Dec. 1861 for the war. He and his unit were surrendered and paroled at Victoria, Texas prior to 8 August 1865. He is the son in law of Mary S Thomas 1821 - 1893 of Ezzell, Lavaca County Texas.

Texas 1st Cavalry Regiment, Partisan Rangers (also called Lane's Regiment, Lanes Rangers) Company D.--- Company D., Crump's Regiment, Lane's Texas Rangers, then stationed west of the Mississippi River and later in South Texas. When the war ended, his unit was in South Texas, engaged in pressing deserters and others evading army duty into service.

He enlisted at Tyler, Smith County, Texas on April 12, 1861 at the age of 40. He was born 1821 Georgia and died May 8, 1867 in Van Zandt County, Texas. Buried Frontier Red Hill Cemetery, Van Zandt County, Texas. Military Headstone says: Co E 1 Regt Texas Cav Confederate States Army

later promoted to Lieutenient and then to Capt.

Marshall is the son of John Pleasant Marshall and Elizabeth Brown. He had two brothers, Robert Pleasant Marshall & James C. Marshall, who also served in the same unit during the Civil War.

Served as a Private and Bugler in Company K of Yeager’s 1st Texas Cavalry also known as the 1st Texas Mounted Rifles. Prior to the war he also served as a Texas Ranger for a time.
