4th South Carolina State Troops

John E. Gandy was a brother to Able Gandy and about 47 Years old when he joined Capt. David G. Woods Company 29th South Carolina Militia at Darlington, SC on 7 July 1863. An election of officers was held on this date by Col. Jos. E. Wingate Commanding 29th Reg't SC Militia. This company became Company E. 4th South Carolina State Troops mustered in at Georgetown, SC on 1 August 1863 by Capt. JOs. Blyth Allison. This unit was used for State and local defense and saw action at Charlestown and the SC Coast.. John's CMR [Company Muster Roll] cards do not mention any action he was in.

Peter was 47 years old when he enlisted at Darlington, South Carolina in Aug 1863 for 6 months in Capt. Wood's Co formed from men of the 29th SC Militia. These were desperate times as manpower was depleted thru disease and battlefield losses. This unit was composed of the young and old. It was formed primarily for local defense. He died May 1898 and is buried beside his wife at Mount Hope Cemetery at Florence SC.

Robert was 39 Years old when he enlisted on 1 August 1863 at Bennettsville, South Carolina. He enlisted in Capt. Nelson M. Gibson's Co., from the 30th Reg't. South Carolina Milita. This company became Company F. 4th Regt. South Carolina [State Troops 6- Months] Assembled Sept 3, 1863 for State Service and Local Defense for six months.

Asa was born 22 July 1817 and is 47 years old when he enlists 7 July 1863 in Capt Nelson M Gibson's Co from the 30th SC Militia at Bennettsville, Marlboro Co. SC. Mustered into Confederate Service for State and Local defense as Co F 4th Regiment State Troops [6 Months] . Unit is made up of the last manpower the state has to offer and is composed of the young and old men. Assigned to 4th Military District of South Carolina, Dept of SC, GA, & Fla. [Sept 1863 - Feb 1864] Battles: Honey Hill, Adam's Run, Coosawhatchie, Savannah, James Island, Evacuation of Charleston, Carolina Campaign & Raleigh, NC. The roster of this unit contains the names of 1,407 men. Asa married my distant cousin Joanna Salmon. They are buried at Hebron Cem. Clio. Marlboro Co. SC DEO VINDICE

John Was born in 1818 in Marlborough District, SC. The regiment was formed 7 July 1863 with many men from the 30th Regt SC Militia. He enlisted at age 41 at Bennettsville, SC in Capt. Nelson M Gibson's Co F., The 4th went into service 3 Sept 1863 and disbanded 1 Feb 1864. John has 4 cards in his archival file. One card gives his discharge date of 1 Feb 1864. He died in1880.

Cornelius was born in 1817 in the Marlboro District of SC. He married Clarissa Stubbs. He was 46 years old when he enlisted in the 30th SC Militia. and merged with Capt. Nelson M Gibson's Co. which became Co F 4th State Troops. This unit was made up of the very young and very old men as all others were already in the fight. He has 4 cards in his CSA archival file. When it was learned that he was the Miller for his area back home it was determined he was essential to the community and was discharged 31 Oct 1863 for that reason. He died in 1865 the reason not know.

Lewis was born18 Jan 1814 in Marlboro District, SC. He enlisted 1 Aug 1863 in Capt Nelson M Gibson;s Co from the 30th Regiment SC Militia. [6 months] He was 45 years old. The manpower situation was desperate in the south and this unit was made up of old men and young boys. On 1 Aug 1864 this Regiment was disbanded and the men absorbed into other units. Assigned to the 4th Military Dept. Sc, Ga, & Fla. Battles: Honey Hill, Adams Run, Green Pond, Cocsawatchie, Savannah, James Island, Evacuation of Charleston, Carolina Campaign and Raleigh, NC. He married Eleanor "Nellie" Covington, my 3rd cousin 4 x removed. She died in 1870 and is buried at Hebron Cem, Marlboro Co. SC and he died 9 June 1894 and is buried in the Spears Family Cem. in Marlboro Co. SC
