Enlisted July 18, 1862 Born Wilkes Co. NC File #M230 Roll 9 Nara M653 5ft 11 inches farmer Cherokee Co. NC

Elisha ROBERTS of Polk Co., TN enlisted at age 52 in Louden, TN on 7/18/1862 into Co. C, Walker's Battalion, Thomas Legion, NC CSA. In Sept 1862, he transferred to Co., A where 2 of his sons had enlisted, after he left to fight, over in Murphy, Cherokee Co., NC. They fought side by side until on July 8, 1863 Elisha died of disease at Frank Ramsey Hospital, Louden, TN. Angry, his 2 sons left the Confederacy and later fought for the Union which service they and later their widow's received a pension. Elisha was born in 1810 in Clarke Co., GA. He married Leathia CLIAN and had 15 children (2 sets of twins) all raised in Isabella/Ducktown, Polk Co., TN. When Elisha died, Leathy claimed his body and it is presumed he was brought back to Ducktown and buried in the Ducktown Cem. where Leathy was buried in 1900 per WPA survey.

Terrell, James Wharey, 1st Lieutenant 2nd Company A, Thomas Legion Enlisted on April 9, 1862 and served as Quartermaster for the Legion. Claims to have fired the last shot of the Confederacy east of the Mississippi in Wayne Co., NC. James was a protege to Col. William Holland Thomas who gave the legion it's name. I have a photo of James Terrell in uniform during the war. Born: December 31, 1829 in Rutherford Co., NC Died: December 26, 1908 in Jackson Co., NC Buried: Thomas Cemetery on the Qualla Reservation, Jackson Co., NC Married: Ann Eliza Keener Children: 6 Occupation: Indian agent, storeowner and NC state legislator

Terrell, William Stewart, 2nd Lieutenant 2nd Company A, Thomas Legion Enlisted on May 13, 1862. Born: October 21, 1836 in Rutherford Co., NC Died: April 30, 1913 Buried: unknown Married: Mary Lucinda Kirkpatrick Children: 10 Occupation: unknown

(3x-Great Uncle) Simon Asbury Dixon (along with his brother, William Anderson Dixon) enlisted at Cherokee County, NC on January 5th, 1863. Served in Company B, Walkers Battalion of Thomas Legion. He and his brother spent 10 rather uneventful months guarding the railway bridges of the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad, experiencing only minor skirmishes until the Federal artillery bombarded Confederate defenders at Carter’s Depot on September 21 and 22. Flanked out of their entrenchments, the Confederates retreated to Zollicoffer, burning the bridge over the Watauga River at Carter’s Depot as they left. Apparently, that was enough of that war for my two uncles, in October 1863 they are listed as deserting at Carters Depot. Simon and William returned and lived the remainder of their lives near the town of Cleveland, Bradley County, TN.

Died of rubiola at Strawberry, TN 25 Dec 1863.

Was elected Corporal at organization, but spend so much time on sick furlough that he was reduced to Private.

George Washington Henry is my great (x4) grandfather. He was born Apr 1, 1828 and died Sept 5, 1864. Son of Vinet Henry and Roseanna Lower Henry. It is unclear whether he was killed in action, died of disease, or died of other causes. He is buried in his home state of Tennessee. George was 36 when he died. It has been rumored in my family that he was killed by Union soldiers dragging him behind a horse.

Robinson, Henry C. Enlisted on January 1, 1863 in Locustfield for 3 years. Served until the surrendered in May of 1865. Filed for his Confederate pension on July 5, 1909 in Haywood County, NC. He was born on 2-10-1845 and died on 7-6-1934. He is buried in Beaver Dam Cemetery in Canton, NC.

Mustered in July 13th, 1862 in Haywood County, NC Captured October 20th, 1863 at the Skirmish of Warm Springs, NC

My Great Great Grandfather was originally in Co. E of the 39th NC. After being seperated from them while on furlough he found Co. D of Thomas' Legion and was placed with them as a sargeant. I am in the process of researching his history and will add to this at a later date.

Justice, William G., Private Company E, Infantry Regiment, Thomas Legion Previously served in Company L, 16th NC Infantry. Transferred to this company on October 5, 1862. Born: December 5, 1835 in Buncombe Co., NC Died: October 5, 1903 in Madison Co., NC Buried: Hiram Rogers Cemetery, Madison Co., NC Married: Elizabeth Arminta Largent Children: 10 Occupation: farmer and rock mason

William Beck enlisted July 19, 1862 and assigned to Company F, the Sharpshooters Company. His unit was transferred to Virginia from North Carolina, May, 1864. He was severely wounded at the Third Battle of Winchester September 19, 1864. He was held as prisoner of war at Baker's Mansion. Transferred to a field hospital October 3, upper leg amputated, October 4, died October 26 of Pyamia, an infection.

Private Rose was my Great Great Grandfather (my Father's Mother's Grandfather). He was with Thomas's Legion, Walker's Battalion, Cavalry Company F. I am interested in any research anyone has done.

William Bryson Cole fought and later receieved a confederate pension under the last name Buchanan. Soon after the war he changed his last name to reflect his maternal ancestors-Cole. WBC was born (1845) in Rutherford County, NC and died (1932) and was buried in Forney (Creek) Township, NC (Great Smoky Mountains). WBC served as a 4th Corporal of Medics, primarily performing his duties in Abingdon, Va. under the General command of Jubal Early. After the war WBC continued practicing medicine and law in the small mountain community of Forney Township until his death in 1932.

My Great Grandfather. In every instance found is recorded as just Eli Ingram, but tombstone has John Eli Ingram. Wife was Mary Catherine Whitaker, daughter of Captain Stephen Whitaker of Walkers Battalion.

Isaac Simpson Land was born on Feb.1, 1834. He died on Aug. 13, 1911. He is buried in Shady Grove Cemetery, Tellico Plains, Monroe County, Tennessee. He was the son of William and Elizabeth Secrest Land. He enlisted on March 5, 1863, into the Confederate Thomas Legion, Company H Walker's Battalion. He is last listed on the muster roll Jan.-Feb. 1864 and noted "AWOL since Aug.31, 1863.

James N. (M.) Land. Enlisted in the Confederate Thomas Legion, Company H Walkers Battalion on March 5, 1863, in Monroe County, Tennessee. He is last mentioned on the Jan-Feb. muster roll as being "absent without leave since Aug.31". Captain Garner Loudermilk of Company H enlisted John, Isaac, and James on March 5, 1863, the first day of his commission. He was dropped from the rolls for "prolonged absence". He took the oath in Feb.1864 and left for Arkansas

Confederate Private John Land Company H Walker's Battalion, Thomas Legion enlisted on March 5, 1863 "on Coker Creek" in Monroe County, Tennessee. The roll for Jan-Feb. 1864 says he was "AWOL at home, sick since June 15, 1863". No further record. He was possibly a son of John Land & Nancy Earp who married in Wilkes County, NC March 20, 1817.

Volunteered on 27 Feb 1862 in Chatham County. Wounded at Malvern Hill on 3 Jul 1862. Died of wound 4 Aug 1862.

Father-in-law of 1st cousin 3 x removed. Enlisted and mustered on 3/15/1862 at Caldwell County, NC as a Private into "I" Co. NC 26th Infantry. Wounded 7/1/1862 Malvern Hill, VA (Left hand). Returned 9/30/1862. He was discharged for disability on 5/9/1863 (Paralysis of left hand). Applied for pension, 7/1/1901.
