My Great Great Grandfather, James E., enlisted 26 May 1862 and mustered out 9 April 1865 @ Appomattox Court House. I am searching for battles this unit may have been in while he served.

My great great grandfather, Jacob B. Baxley, died from disease as a POW at Camp Chase, Ohio on Nov. 14, 1864. He is buried at Camp Chase Cemetery in grave # 463. He is listed in the book, The Story of Camp Chase by William H. Knauss but his name is misspelled in the book. He was a Robeson County, NC native. WAS A FARMER PRIOR TO ENTERING THE SERVICE. ENLISTED AS A PRIVATE IN THE CIVIL WAR ON APRIL 19, 1862. ENLISTED IN COMPANY C. 54TH NC INFANTRY REGIMENT ON MAY 19, 1862. POW ON MAY 4 1863 AT FREDERICKSBURG, VA. TRANSFERRED ON MAY 7, 1863 AT FT. DELAWARE, DE. EXCHANGED ON MAY 23, 1863 AT CITY POINT, VA. RETURNED ON SEPTEMBER 1, 1863. POW ON JUNE 18, 1864 AT LUNCHBURG, VA. CONFINED ON JUNE 20, 1864 AT ANTHENEUM PRISON IN WHEELING, WV. TRANSFERRED ON JULY 11, 1864 TO CAMP CHASE IN COLUMBUS, OH. DIED OF DISEASE WHILE A POW ON NOV. 14, 1864 IN CAMP CHASE, OH. UNIT HISTORY: 54th Infantry Regiment was assembled at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina, in May, 1862. The men were from the counties of Rowan, Burke, Cumberland, Northampton, Iredell, Guilford, Wilkes, Yadkin, Columbus, and Granville. It was assigned to General Law`s, Hoke`s, Godwin`s, and W.G. Lewis` Brigade, Army of Northern Virgina. The 54th was engaged at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, then guarded prisoners captured at Winchester during the Pennsylvania Campaign. Later it took part in Bristoe and Mine Run campaigns, the conflicts at Plymouth and Drewry`s Bluff, Early`s Shenandoah Valley operations, and the Appomattox Campaign. This regiment lost 6 killed and 40 wounded at Fredericksburg, had 3 killed and 38 wounded at Chancellorsville and 2 wounded and 306 missing at the Rappahannock River. It totalled about 700 men in July, 1864, and surrendered with 4 officers and 53 men of which 23 were armed. The field officers were Colonels James C.S. McDowell, Kenneth M. Murchison, and John Wimbish; Lieutenant Colonel Anderson Ellis; and Major James A. Rogers

E, 54th Reg., NC Inf.; reported absent with leave in May/Jun 1862; promoted to Sgt. In Jul/Sep 1862; deserted ca 12 Nov 1862 after being detailed to go to Alexander Co and other nearby counties to apprehend deserters; reduced to ranks on or about the same date; went over to the Union side about 1 Aug 1864; confined at Knoxville, TN 5 Aug 1864; trans. To Chattanooga, TN about 9 Aug 1864; trans. To Louisville, KY where he arrived 15 Aug 1864; released at Louisville 27 Aug 1864 after taking the oath of allegiance.

david was my great-great 1st cousin and nephew to pinckney apple, also of the 54th co f. he enlisted 03/12/1863. he was captured 11/07/1863 at the battle of rappahhnock station. sent to pt. lookout, md., he was paroled 05/10/1865.

peter was my great-great uncle, brother to pinckney also of the 54th. he enlisted late in the war, 02/15/1864. he survived, surrendering with his reg 04/1865.

pinckney (also spelled pinkney) was my great-great grandfather who enlisted 05/27/1862 and served as a division teamster until the unit's surrender with lee.

william was my great-great 1st cousin who was the brother to david a. and nephew to pinckney apple also of the 54th. he enlisted 02/27/1862 and was promoted to corporal 09/13/1862. he was admitted to hospital #9 in richmond with smallpox and died on 11/30/1862.

george was my great-great 1st cousin and was related to zachariah, my great-great grandfather, and william riley chrisman also a great-great 1st cousin. george enlisted 03/12/1862 and was wounded 05/04/1863 near fredericksberg,va. on 11/07/1863 he was captured after the fight at rappahhnock station and taken to pt. lookout, md. on 04/19/1864 he died of disease and was buried in a mass graveyard near the camp.

1st Sergeant William Riley Chrismon was born in Guilford Co. and was a farmer prior to enlisting May 6th 1862 at the age of 30. He was mustered in as Corporal, the promoted to Sergeant 15 Oct. 1862. Reported as present or accounted for through Oct. 1863. He was killed at the battle of Rappahannock Station, VA on 7 Nov. 1863. He died leaving 2 sons and 2 daughtersin Osceola, NC

My Great, great, great Grandfather enlisted in Wake County at age 35, 1 November, 1863. Six days later, 7 November, most of the Company, including William, was captured at Rappahanock Station, VA. He was confined at Point Lookout Maryland 11 November 1863 until 20 March 1864 when he was paroled. Regretably, but understandably, he went home and never returned to duty. He was reported AWOL in September-October, 1864.

He deserted May 18, 1863 at Fredericksburg, Virginia and returned September 23, 1863. Absent September 30, 1864 and then was a POW April 7, 1865 in Petersburg, Virginia and confined April 7, 1865 at Hart’s Island, NY Harbor. Took Oath of Allegiance June 17, 1865 at Hart’s Island, NY Harbor. He died March 20, 1932 in Zephyr, Surry County, North Carolina.

Simeon A. Jarvis enlisted on March 17,1862 in Yadkin Co. NC as a Corporal and was mustered into H Company, 54th Infantry. Nov 7th, 1863 Simeon was listed as 'POW' at Rappahannock Station, VA and was confined in the 'Old Capital Prison in Washington DC.
