Rockingham County, NC-Enlisted 12 Feb 1862 at the age of 22. Deserted 16 Aug 1862. Returned 1 Nov 1862. Court-martialed on 13 Jan 1863. Found not guilty of desertion but was found guilty of absence without leave. Sentenced to 25 days hard labor with ball and chain, or block and chain, weighing twelve pounds, attached to left leg and 7 days solitary confinement on bread and water. Returned to duty March-April 1863. Wounded severely in the arm on or about 3 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. Reported absent wounded through Dec 1863. Retired to Invalid Corps 19 July 1864. After the war, James Hill lived and farmed in Stoneville, NC. His son Horace Greely Hill was my Great Grandfather. James Hill died 12 Dec 1905 (My great, great, Grandfather!)

John W. May was born on January 29, 1816, in Rockingham County, North Carolina. Trained as a physician, he was practicing medicine when the Civil War erupted in 1861. In April of 1862, he entered Confederate service after helping to raise a company of volunteers in Rockingham County. He was assigned as Captain of Company A in the 45th North Carolina Infantry Regiment Captain May served during the Peninsula Campaign and participated in the Seven Days Battles in the summer of 1862, including the brutal assault at the Battle of Malvern Hill. These engagements marked General Robert E. Lee’s first major offensive operations in defense of Richmond and were among the most intense early campaigns of the war. May resigned his commission on September 2, 1862, after seeing active combat during the Confederacy’s formative campaigns in Virginia. He returned to civilian life in North Carolina and lived there until his death in October 1897. Though his wartime service was relatively brief, he served as an officer during some of the Army of Northern Virginia’s earliest and hardest-fought battles.

John and Thomas Patterson were brothers and were from Henry County Va.

James enlisted March 11, 1862 in the 45th NC Regiment Company A. He died of unknown causes in December 1862.

Josephus enlisted May 3, 1861 at the age of 18 in the 45th NC Regiment Company A. He was promoted to Sergeant on Feb. 25, 1863. He was wounded in the left thigh at Gettysburg in July 1863. He was hospitalized at Chester, PA., until transferred to City Point, VA., where he was exchanged, Sept. 23, 1863. He rejoined his company in January 1864. He was captured on the South Side Railroad near Petersburg, Va., Apr. 2,1865. He was confined at Hart's Island, New York Harbor until he was released on June 18,, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

Born in Floyd Co., VA; married in Rockingham Co., NC in Oct, 1853; POW; released from a Greensboro, NC facility in 1865; moved back to Floyd Co., VA after the war.

King was born about 1823 at Stoneville, Mayo Twp, Rockingham County, NC. He enlisted at Grogansville, 15 March 1862 for 3 years or the war in Capt. John W. Mays Company {Rockingham Zollieoffers] and mustered at Camp Maugum 4 April 1862. He has 25 cards in archival file. He was 43 years old and suffered with Dysentery his entire career. Most of his official records deal with his being in the hospital or at home on sick furlough. He was the 2nd husband as her first husband died in the war of my 5th cousin 4 x removed. He died Sept 1880 at his home in Henry Co. Horse Pasture Twp., Va.

David was born in Rockingham Co. NC in Dec 1832. The 1860 census finds him in Pleasantville at age 28 in that county. He enlisted in Capt. John W May's Co. [Rockingham Zollieoffers] 45th Regt NC State Troops. He has 2 cards in his archival file. The 2nd card shows him on a report of Parole of Prisoners released 29 May at Greensboro, NC. Battles: Seven Days, 2nd Bull Run / Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg and Appomattox. He was the father-in-law of my 5th cousin 4 x removed. He died in Huntsville, Huntsville Twp. Rockingham County, NC in 1912. I have not found his grave. I suspect he is buried at Eden Cem in Ellisboro, in that place where he died.

Wounded at Gettysburg, PA July 1-3, 1863. Wounded (shot through the thigh, lying on battlefield 17 hours) and captured at battle of Fisher's Hill (Strasburg), VA September, 1864. Peter was born 11 April 1833 in Rockingham County, NC. the 1860 census has him in that county at Leakesville at age 27. He has 39 items in his archival file. He enlisted 23 April 1862. He fought his first fight in the Peninsula Campaign known as the Seven Days, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He was wounded [ minnie ball thru chest entering about 1 inch below the left scapula, injuring his lung. Another wound to the pelvis area [left thigh] He was left on the battlefield and captured by the enemy on the 5th. He was taken to the enemy hospital and survived. His Yankee hospital records are well recorded. He was sent to Point Lookout and to City Point for exchange. On 20 March 1864 he is admitted to the CSA Hosp #5 at Richmond. He is discharged and retired 8 Dec 1864 and assigned to the Invalid Corps. He died 2 May 1899 and is buried at the Providence Baptist Church at Stoneville, in his home county. He was the father-in-Law of my 5th cousin 4 x removed.

Volunteered March 6th, 1862 under C.E. Shober at Greensboro, North Carolina. Saw action at various battles including Gettysburg. Captured during the battle of Spotsylvania May 10th, 1864. Held a prisoner of war at Elmira, New York until released May 19th, 1865.

Emanuel volunteered in Guilford County on March 10, 1862. He was captured in Gettysburg, PA, when he was left behind to nurse the wounded. He was confined at David's Island, New York until September 8, 1863, when he was paroled and transferred to City Point, Virginia, for exchange. He was returned to service and was captured at North Anna, Virginia on May 24, 1864. He was confined at Elmira, New York, until May 29, 1865, when he was released after taking the oath of allegiance. He returned home to the Thomasville area where he lived until his death on June 10, 1870.

William C. Mann (my 3rd great uncle) was wounded at the battle of Gettysburg and captured by the Union. Age 19-20

William Laton was in the July 1st battle at Gettysburg, was wounded in the hand. He survived the Civil War and moved to Alice, TX. He married Georgiann Godley and they had one son, Asa Griffin. William Laton died 15 May 1925 in Alice, Tx.

He enlisted at Orange Court House on Mar 1, 1864 at the age of 40 and was assigned to the 45th INF Co. C. He was at the battle of Fishers Hill, VA and was caprtured by Gen Sheridan's troops. Was sent to Point Lookout, MD and survived his inprisonment and paroled at Greensboro in May 5th 1865. He was a part of a prisoner exchange. If anyone has any pictures or more information on this unit, could you please scan and email them to us.

Jim Miller, Southport, N.C. Daughter Mrs. Susan Caroline Malcolm Woollen (d Charlotte, N.C., March 23, 1920), is in 1890's book 'Lee Family of Virginia' by Edmund Jennings Lee.

Personal effects presented to widow, Charlotte Pratt Richardson on March 11, 1865.

William C. Simpson died during the War Between the States and if anyone has more information on this history I would appreciate it. He was with the 45th Infantry. Thank you.

Wounded in neck in trenches of Petersburg, Virginia, in December, 1864. Wife Permelia walked from Stokesdale, NC to Petersburg to retrieve him, and he returned to his home near Stokesdale. Still recovering in NC when Army of Northern Virginia surrendered at Appomattox, Va. Received his parole in Greensboro, NC.

Died while on guard duty at prisoner of war camp in Danville, Virginia.

george was my great-great grandfather, a farmer who enlisted in the 45th on 09/25/1862. he was wounded between april and may of 1864 and recuperated in camp winder. he was later taken prisoner outside of strasburg, va on 10/1/1864 and sent to pt lookout, md where he was exchanged in feb of 1865. returned to his unit an served until the surrender at appomatox.

Lewis was my great-great 2nd cousin who volunteered at age 27 on 05/08/1862. He was an ordnance teamster and captured 03/25/1865 near Petersberg, Va. Transferred to Pt. Lookout, Md. he was paroled 06/14/1865

William J. Weadon was my Great Grandfather. He was the father of James Jefferson Weadon. James was the father of Robert Cowan Weadon, my father - all of the state of N.C.

Alvis was born Abt 1836 in Orange Co. NC. He enlisted at Reidsville, Rockingham Co. NC on 27 Feb 1862 in Capt. Samuel Boyd's Co known as [ Troublesome Boy's ]. He has 24 items in his archival file. After being in some dozen fights he is captured at the battle of Spotsylvania Court House. Taken to Point Lookout Maryland and on 3 Aug transferred to Elmira NY. He died there of pneumonia on 8 Jan 1863. His grave was moved to the Woodland National Cemetary at Elmira, Chemung Co NY. his grave # 1306. He was the husband of my 5th cousin 4 x removed. He left a grieving wife and two small children.

John was born 1842 in Stoneville, Mayo Twp, Rockingham Co. NC. He has 12 cards in his archival file. He enlisted 11 May at Elm Grove. He is in the same company as his brother James Capt. John R. Winston's Co. [Dan River Rangers] John died 1 July 1863 on the first day of the battle of Gettysburg, Pa. on the assault on Cemetery Hill. He was my distant cousin.

Joseph was 28 years old from Rockingham Co. NC. He enlisted there on 1 Sept. 1862. His unit was soon sent to Petersburg Va. He become very sick and is sent to the hospital. He is then sent home on sick furlough. He returns to his unit and in 1863 he is again a patient in the CSA hospital at the Orange Co Va. Court House. He died there on 18 Dec. 1863. He appears on a Roster of Deceased Soldiers, his effects are $8.30 cents.

My great, great grandfather Lt. William E. Harris enlisted in 1862 and died 1 July 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Issac signed up for service at Wentworth court house in 1864. He was paroled with the confederate army at Appormatox. He returned to Mayodan NC to resume his life as a farmer.

The record starts: 'Robert Haywood Lewis was a soldier in the Confederate States Army. ... age 22, height 6 ft. 1 in., light brown hair, blue eyes; born Rockingham County, N.C.; enlisted as a corporal Mar. 11, 1862 at Elm Grove (now called Deep Springs) in Company F, Dan River Rangers, 45th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry, CSA.' The record continues: 'Wounded July 1, 1863 Gettysburg ... admitted to Field Hospital No. 9 on outskirts of Richmond, Va. (July 20, 1863). Transferred same day to Chimborazo Hospital where a bullet was removed from his right hand. Because of delay in not having bullet removed ... infection had set in. He was transferred ... to CSA General Hospital, Danville, where in August, 1863, he was sent home on thirty days furlough, drawing $5.32 in lieu of rations while home on leave. Returned to duty September, 1863. April 2, 1865 (Sunday) (his 25th birthday), he was captured in the siege of Petersburg, Va. Put aboard a Union prison ship ... and transported to Point Lookout, Maryland. After formal surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia ... April 9th, Haywood's status was that of a stateless person. On June 28, 1865, he signed an oath of allegiance to the United States in order to have his citizenship restored, and he was that day released from prison.'

He died of disease on 27 Sep 1863 while a POW at Ft. Delaware, DE. Buried in a mass grave at Finns Point National Cemetery, Pennsville, Salem County, New Jersey, USA ***** Given the three-year commitment upon his enlistment in March 1863, it's possible that Lafayette Osborne was conscripted under the provisions of the Conscription Act of 1862. The three-year commitment aligns with the term of service mandated by the conscription acts for those who were drafted into the Confederate military. Additionally, the timing of his enlistment in 1863, during a period of increasing conscription and manpower shortages for the Confederate army, further supports the possibility that he was conscripted into service. Thomas was conscripted at age 25 on 1 Sept 1862 from Rockingham Co.NC. He reenlisted at Drewys Bluff on the James River, Va for 3 years on 5 Oct 1863. Captured at Spottsylvania Court House, Va on 20 May 1864. Sent to Point Lookout and on to Elmira, NY arriving 3 July 1864. Released on 17 May 1865 after ' Swallowing the Yellow Dog'. At some point he was charged $11 for losing his bayonet. Thomas is in my ancestor tree relate by a distant marriage.

William was born in Stoneville, Mayo Twp. Rockingham County, NC 12 Jan 1842. He enlisted 11 March 1862 at Elm Grove and mustered 5 April 1862.at Camp Mangum near Raleigh. He was sick in camp and soon sent home on sick leave. His condition did not improve. He was in and out of the hospital until 8 Feb 1863 when he was medically discharged by Regimental Surgeon for disability. Diagnosed with Chronic Rheumatism and Vascular heart disease resulting in the loss of use of both arms. He died 6 Jan 1919 and is buried in the Carter Cemetery in his hometown of Stoneville. He was my cousin.

Private Vernon was wounded in the head/neck area during the battle of Bull Run. He died from the wound 18 May 1863 at the age of 35 leaving a wife and 7 small children. The family moved from North Carolina to Smyth County, Virginia. He was my Great Grandfather and there is a tinplate picture existing.

George Coleman enlisted in to Company K of the 45th North Carolina Infantry on February 1, 1864 and transferred to Company G in March 1864. The 45th North Carolina was formed out of Rockingham County, N.C. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 10, 1864. George Coleman was taken to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland May 18, 1864 where he died June 26, 1864 of Typhoid Fever.
