Enlisted Apr 12,1862 at age of 26. Brother George W was in 29th NC Inf. Captured at Kolb's Farm near Marietta Ga. on June 22 1864. Sent to Nashville Tenn and then transfered to Louisville,Ky. July 13.1864. From there he was transfered to Camp Morton, Indianapolis,Ind. Paroled and shipped to City Point on James River Virginia March 4,1865.6 days after his brother George died on prisoner exchange at City Point. Also note Matthew and George had two brothers who fought for the Union Army. See Alexander and Lorenzo Dow Beachboard

Enlisted in Buncombe Co N C on Apr 12,1862 as a private ,5 ft 9 ins tall and a farmer. He is listed as sick in hospital March-April 1863 until June 1863. Was killed at Jonesboro Ga on Aug 31 1864

I have a muster roll for him dying in a hospital in Murfreesboro 19th Dec 1862 and no info on it as to what he died of. Enlisted in April 1862.

Enlisted as a Private on 31 August 1864 at the age of 44. Captured on 12 April 1865 at Salisbury, NC. Forwarded to Louisville, KY from Nashville, TN on 29 April 1865. Transferred to Camp Chase, OH on 2 May 1865. Paroled on 13 June 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

John enlisted May 17, 1862 as a private..

24 years old when he joined in Asheville, NC on 17 May 1862. Listed as a farmer, 5' 7' tall, born in Haywood County. Killed at Chicamauga, GA 20 Sep 1863.

'The Sixtieth's casualties were but slight, a few men only being wounded. Among that number was James Parker, of Company E, whose wound necessitated the amputation of one arm. This was done most skilfully by Dr. McKay, surgeon of the regiment.' Report by Lt. Colonel Ray, after the Battle of Jackson, Miss. July 16th, 1863.

Captured at Ruff's Mill, near Smyrna, Ga. on July 4th, 1864.

Enlisted May, 29,1862. Prisoner of war August 27,1863. Died September 30, 1863 of Dysentery. Buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Chicago Ill. Died as a prisoner of war at Camp Douglas in Cook County Illinois.

With his brother William Franklin, Fidelio enlisted as a private at age 22 at Asheville, North Carolina on 17 May 1862 and was mustered in at Camp Smith 1 August 1862 for the duration of the war in Co. “E” (Buncombe Farmers) 60th N.C. Infantry C.S.A. It was noted that he was 5 feet 10 inches tall. The records of November and December 1862 stated the he “never reported” and for January and February 1863 that he was absent sick. For March and April he seems to have been present for it was noted that he “Went home on furlough never rejoined, dropped from the roll. Deserted 1 Aug. 62” yet he was paid $11 per month from 17 May to 1 August 1862. From June 30 to October 31 he was “absent, sick at home- reports monthly”, November and December 1863 he was absent, at home sick, and January and February was absent, “out on leave- Furloughed- Quit reporting but by March 1864 he “Has all his pay due & Confederate & State bounty.” For the May and June report 1864 he was “Absent, Sick sent Hospt 3 July 64 [by] Dr. Griffin”, transferred to Ocmulgee Hospital in Macon, Georgia on 5 July then to General Hospital 8 July 1864 and died 25 August 1864 at General Hospital number 2 at Eufala, Alabama. On 29 June 1865, his widow Harriett Israel Ratcliff married Andrew Jackson Hawkins. He was born 6 January 1837 and died 12 August 1902, Harriett died in 1917.

William Franklin Ratcliff was born July 19, 1829 in Leicester, N.C. He died 22 June 1864 and is believed to be a twin to Celina. He married Mary Lucinda Embler, born in 1834 died 31 August 1916. They had four children. William Franklin enlisted 17 May 1862 at age 34 and was mustered in at Camp Smith 1 August 1862 as a private in Company “E” 60th North Carolina Infantry C.S.A. The record states he was 5 feet 11 inches tall. In his brother Marion Isaac’s letter of 9 November 1861, he is mentioned with him in Raleigh, North Carolina. From 26 June to 2 August 1863, William “was on detached service as a wagoner from Stovall’s Brigade with the supply train under General Johnston at Camp Hurricane Mississippi”. From 1 to 18 August 1863 he served as a teamster and his name appears on the list of noncommissioned officers and privates employed on extra duty at O.M. Department. He was killed in action at Marietta, Georgia on 22 June 1864, buried at the Confederate Cemetery, Marietta, Georgia. His widow later married the millwright R. Frank Boyd born in South Carolina in 1842. William F and Mary had four children: Hilary Montraville, Minervy Evaline, Sarah Jane, and Mary Lucinda Ratcliff.

Celina “Lina” E. Ratcliff born 19 July 1829 in Leicester and died 13 March 1922, she is buried at Sluder Cemetery in Buncombe County. She married Mitchell Sluder born 1825 at Dix Creek, Buncombe County, North Carolina. Mitchell enlisted in Company “E” 60th N. C. Infantry C.S.A. on 1 August 1862 and died in 1863 at Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Born 1839 in Rutherford County (part that became Polk CO), NC. Died in Walker's Division Hospital in Shubuta, MS on 10 Sep 1863. Died of pneumonia contracted while recovering from wounds. Left a widow and 1 yr old son at home. Was the eldest son of Sheriff George Blackwell of Polk CO.

Born 1838 in Rutherford Co, NC. Married Elizabeth Blackwell, daughter of Sheriff George Blackwell of Polk County. Survived the war, surrendered and was paroled at Durham, NC with combined 58th NC Inf, Co H.

Polk Co NC Farmboy married to Sheriff George Blackwell's daughter Harriett. Son of Wiley S Walker and Elizabeth Stover. Died in Hospital in Atlanta, GA 10 January 1863. Cause not recorded.

Mustered into Buncombe Farmers (Co H)as an 18 year old at 5'5'. Was wounded at Resacca in May 1864 and was paroled 1 May 1865 with the 58th Inf at Greensboro, NC. After war married Nancy M Hall, sister to my GGGgrandfather, Lawson A Hall of Thomas's Legion.

Joe Kelley was born about 1832 in Cocke Co., TN and was married to Sarah E. Praiswater in ca 1855. He was residing in the Long Creek community of Cocke Co. at the time of his enlistment. He died near Chattanooga TN and is buried in a mass grave in the NC section of the Confederate Memorial Cemetery at Chattanooga, TN. He had three children: Sarah F. Kelley, William Anthony Kelley and George Kelley.

i would like to add joanthan to the list of soliders he was in the 60th inf. co.I he serve the whole war and had a slight wound to the hip

Joel was captured at the Battle of Rosacea, GA and sent to Alton Confederate Military prison. He eventually contracted pneumonia and died at Alton. He is buried there in Alton's cemetery and his name appears on the Confederate monument.

Enlisted 15 May 1862 at Asheville, N.C. elected 3rd Sergeant; after battle of Murfreesboro, Tn. promoted to 2nd Sergeant; medically discharged 5 February 1863 due to result of a fracture and dislocated hip he suffered 13 years earlier as a teenager.

Inlisted May 15 1862.Died of possible injuries in the battle of Stone River. Died on febuary 6th 1864 at theTullahoma hospital. Burial in Maplewood cemetery Tullahoma Tn.

Inlisted may 15th 1862. Last muster roll stated Sick sent to hospital August 28th 1864. Possibly died in Jonesborough Georgia or Atlanta. Has a headstone in Buncombe County North Carolina.
