1831-1912 Enlisted 0n 1 Oct 1861 at Duplin Co., North Carolina as a Sgt. Subsequently promoted during the course of the war. Wounded at Gettysburg on 3 July 1863.

Sergeant Pearsall was born in 1842 in Duplin County, North Carolina, the son of William and Sarah Whitaker Pearsall. He enlisted on October 1, 1861 as a Private. On March 15, 1863, he was promoted to Third Sergeant. On July 3, 1863, he was wounded and hospitalized at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On January 13, 1864, Sergeant Pearsall died of disease at DeCamp General Hospital on David's Island, New York. He was survived by his parents, and five siblings.

Born in 1838. He was a farmer and at age 23 enlisted on 10-16-1861. Present until he deserted on 4-11-1864. Returned to duty on 9-18-1864. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA, on 4-9-1865. This is all the information I have. I know that he fathered two children, my great grandfather and his brother who were illegitimate and so his surname was not passed down to me. Instead, their mother gave her children her own maiden name which was later mine.

John C. Cozort (aka Cozart) was the older (b. 1836) brother of Thomas Jefferson Cozort of the 26th NC Infantry who was killed at The Angle during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg 7/3/1863. Both were born in Surrey County and lived in Yadkin County. One source states that John enlisted 6/1/1862. Since he was killed at Beaver Dam Creek (Seven Days Battles) on June 26, 1862, he was a soldier for less than a month. [It is possible that John enlisted a year or so earlier, when the unit was formed.] The fight at Beaver Dam Creek (VA) is also known as Mechanicsville, and John apparently lost his life on the first day of the Seven Days conflicts. Interestingly -- or tragically -- about a year after John was killed, his 38th was involved in the infamous 'Pickett's Charge' at Gettysburg. The 38th is said to have suffered 90% casualties on that day. Brother Thomas' life was lost during that same battle, and his 26th NC Infantry lost more than 90% on the day. Thomas was killed some 10 to 20 feet short of The Angle, the spot where the Confederates' 'High Water Mark' of the Gettysburg battles was reached -- where they breached Union lines during Pickett's madness. Some of John's comrades also reached The Angle and the rock walls of the High Water Mark.

Enlisted at age 21 in Yadkin County on 10/16/1861 as Pvt. Promoted to Cpl. between April/June 1862. Promoted to Sgt. 5/18/1863. Captured at Wilderness, VA on 5/6/1864. Confined at Point Lookout, MD on 5/17/1864. Transferred to Elmira, NY 8/10/1864. Released at Elmira 5/23/1865 after taking oath of allegiance.

James was born and raised in Surry Co. (Now Yadkin Co.) N.C. There has been great confusion on the fact that there were two James Stokes's in the 38th, Listed as Sr. and Jr. The eldest enlisted at age 36 and is my 2nd Greatgrandfather . The other James enlisted at age 19 and is His Nephew , born to his eldest brother John. His full name being James Nathen Stokes. James Ervin also had a brother named Henry, that joined the 33rd . James Ervin was KIA at Beaver Dam Creek Jun 26 1862, and Henry was KIA Jun. 27 1862 at Gaines Mill . I have been searching for any indication of where the KIA's are buried with no luck , seems there is no record of the location of the dead from the 38th or 33rd during the 7 days Battles Can anyone help?

Micajah Wright, at the age of 44, enlisted on Sept 9,1944 as a Private in the North Carolina 38th Infantry, Company B. His son, Amos Wright, was a Private in the North Carolina 42 Infantry-Company A. Micajah lived to the age of 90, and was a blacksmith by trade. He and his wife, Holland Wisenhunt, are buried near Davidson, North Carolina. He was my Great, Great, Great Grandfather.

Born in Sampson County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Sampson County. Elected 3rd Lieutenant on October 22, 1861. Elected 2nd Lieutenant on April 18, 1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on July 24, 1862. Promoted to Captain on August 21, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the shoulder at or near Gettysburg, PA, July 1, 1863. Returned to duty in January-February, 1864. Wounded in the abdomen at Reams' Station, Virginia, August 25, 1864. Hospitalized in Petersburg, VA and died of wounds September 24, 1864.

James was born in the Fair Ground Twp of Richmond Co. NC in 1838. He enlisted at Troy, Montgomery Co. NC 13 May 1864 at age of abt 26. He was promoted to Sergeant 15 Oct 1864. He was captured 3 April 1865 at the battle of Hatchers Run. He was sent to Point Lookout and on to Harts Island in New York Harbor. He swallowed the yellow dog on 19 June 1865 and was released. He must have been very sick as he died that year. He is described as having a dark complexion and hair, grey eyes and 6 foot 1/2 inches tall. His battles were: The Petersburg Siege, Globe Tavern, Ream's Station, Fort Harrison, Jones Farm and Hatchers Run where he was captured. May God rest his soul.

Benjamin was from Black Jack Township, Richmond Co. NC. Enlisted 31 Dec 1862 in Capt Oliver H Dockery's Co [Richmond Boys] Was engaged at battle of Seven Days, Gains Mill, White Oak Swamp and was wounded at Malvern Hill on 1 July 1862 [ nature of wounds not stated] however he was granted a medical discharge two weeks later on 15 Jul 1862. died 12 Nov 1915 and is buried in Alfred Dockery's Cem. Rockingham, Richmond Co. NC.

Samuel was 27 and a planter from Richmond Co. NC. He took the oath of allegience to the state of North Carolina as a volunteer in Capt. Oliver W. Dockerey's Company [ Richmond boys] 38th Reg. NC Inf. [State Troops] at camp Mangum NC on 31 Dec. 1861 for 12 months. In Nov. of 1862 he spends 4 months in hospital with chronic dearrhea and a lacarated Cornea and transferred to Danville, Va. He is in and out of the hospital with various medical problems through out his service. He was captured at Petersburg,Va. on 3 April 1865 and sent to Point Lookout, Md. He was released on 16 June 1865 after swallowing the yellow dog.

A 5th great-grandfather, Pvt. George W. Dayberry (1822-1913) enlisted in Co I, 38th NC Infantry in April, 1864 at the age of 42. From Rutherford Co, NC. Father of Pvt. John O. Dayberry, same company. Buried at Deviney Cemetery in Rutherford Co. with C.S.A. veteran marker.

A 3rd great-grandfather, Pvt. John O. Dayberry enlisted in Co. I, 38th NC Infantry in Aug. 1864 at the age of 16. From Rutherford Co, NC. Was awarded Confederate service pension from Ky. in 1921. Died in Uniontown, Ky. in 1928. Buried at St. Agnes Cemetery with C.S.A. veteran marker.

M230 Roll 14 National Archives Registry. It was stated that my great-great grandfather, Thomas S. Gardner was part of the Pettigrew-Trimble assault at Gettysburg on July 03, 1863 and declared KIA. Burial site unknown.

Captured at Petersburg, Virginia April 3, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout,Maryland April 13th,1865. Released on June 16,1865, after taking the oath of allegiance. I have his orginal release and oath that he signed. He was my great-great-great grandfather. He grave is in Bakersville, N.C. Mitchell County.

samuel curtis was my 3rd great grandfather. he enlisted in the confederate army in caldwell county, nc on october 19, 1863. he was taken prisoner at the siege of petersburg, va on june 22, 1864 and sent to point lookout, maryland. he was sent from there to the union pow camp in chemung, elmira, ny and arrived there on july 23, 1864. he died there, of dissentary, on february 23, 1865. DEO VENDICE !! HONOR THE MEMORY OF OUR SOUTHERN HEROES ! he is buried at woodlawn national cemetary (grave # 2246) in elmira, ny.
