28th North Carolina Infantry

This is my second Great Grandfather. He was in the 28th Regiment of the NC Infantry. He became a POW on March 14 1862. I am seeking info on the battle he would have been captured in.

I have sketchy information that makes me believe William W.M. Hall, from Haywood County, NC, served in the 28th North Carolina, and if anyone can shed light on this, it would be appreciated.

nickolas f. cunningham was my great,great grandfather.

William Franklin was my husband's great grandfather. He was the brother of Shadrack and Nickolas Cunningham. He was wounded in the right shoulder at Chancellorville and captured at Petersburg, VA. He spent about 5 months at Fort Delaware, until he signed the Oath of Allegiance and was released in September.

James H Lane Brigade 28th NC Inf. Regiment Co. A. Enlisted May 1861 and was a currier in JH Lane's Headquarters Staff at Appomattax.

Charles Hardy was from Surry County NC , married Eliza Jane Vernon. They were my 2nd Great Grandparents.

I am looking for the detailed service history of my ggrand father. He served through the war from 1862 to the surrender. He was from Surry County/ Mount Airey, NC. Family oral history says he served as an orderly for the regt.. I cant find any information to verify this. He was also supposed to have been wounded at Gettysburg. I cant find this information either. Thanks.

Robert was my great-great 2nd cousin who volunteered on 08/13/1861 at age 18. He was wounded at Frayser's Farm on 06/30/1862. He was transported to Richmond, Va. and dies of his wounds 08/13/1862.

Enlisted at age of 21 on 12 Aug 1861 at Fort Fisher, died of typhoid fever 14 Mar 1862 in Wilmington, NC, with body interned to town cemtery and personal effects sent to post office of Roswins, Gaston Co., NC (Source: Confederate Service Record).

Served as a volunteer in Co. B, 28th N.C. Regiment and was on the Regimental Honor Roll in 1862. His record shows he was on a list of Prisoners of War belong to the Army of Northern Virginia, who had been this day, April 09, 1865, surrendered by General Robert E. Lee, Commanding General Army Of Northern Virginia and paroled at the Appomattox Court House.

Born the 8th of Jan 1842, died 7th July 1863, Wounded the 3rd of July 1863,in the Wheat Field.

Peter Mauney: born in Cleveland County, NC, he was a resident of Gaston County when he enlisted and was mustered on the same day, July 30, 1861, as a Private in Co. B, of the 28th North Carolina Infantry. He was one of five men from the Regiment killed at the Battle of Shepherdstown on September 20, 1862.

W.A. Mauney was a quartermaster in NC 28th regiment , co. B . His hand written diary is still in the family . His younger brother Peter was killed at Shepardstown with another unit .

Adolphus and family from Catawba (Lincoln) County, NC. Enlisted on August 26, 1861 in the 28th Infantry Reg't at the age of 18. He was captured at Hanover Courthouse on 5/27/1862 and paroled back to the 28th on 8/5/1862. He was wounded in the left leg at Jericho Mills on 5/23/1864. His leg was amputated. Adolphus is mentioned in relation to a book called 'Phantom Pain: North Carolina's Artificial-Limbs Program for Confederate Veterans', which was published in 1994. He is listed as a member of Company G (which is a change from his original Company C) at the surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.

Avery Linebarger was born in 1844 and lived in Catawba County. He enlisted on 3/15/1862 in Catawba County. Avery was wounded at Shepherdstown on 9/20/1862 and was captured at Deep Bottom on 7/27/1864. He was transferred to the prison camp at Elmira, NY on 8/18/1864 and died there of typhoid fever on 9/21/1864.

Enlisted 1862, wounded 6 times, never captured, cited for bravery at Fredricksburg, surrendered with Lee at Appomattox.

Was captured at Hanovers courthouse, taken to new york, died at Governors island,1862

Family records show Riley Mauldin fighting with the 28th throughout the entire war. Confirmed by Mr. Don Ernsberger that he was a particapent in the Pettigew - Trimble charge at Gettysburg. He was wounded in the face and captured at Gettysburg.

Wilson Cooper Morris was my 2nd Great Maternal Grandfather. He joined the 28th NC, Company D ("Stanly Yankee Hunters") in 1862. He was wounded in the foot at Gettysburg, and was captured on July 5th during the retreat. He was paroled in 1864 from Gordonsville, VA due to "heart trouble" and returned to Stanly County. He died in 1907 in Salisbury, NC. His grandson John Alfred Morris (my grandfather) was in the 115th machine gun battalion of the 30th Division (Old Hickory Division) during WW1. He served during the battle of the Hindenburg line. Born in 1896, he died in 1999 at the age of 103, and was the last WW1 veteran of Stanly County.

I have some sketchy information that James enlisted in 1864, which I don't understand as he would have been about 37 years of age. Why would he have not enlisted in 1861? I am looking for all ancestors who fought for the Confederacy.

Roll of Honor NC 28TH REGIMENT The 28th Infantry Regiment was organized and mustered into Confederate service in September 1861, at High Point, North Carolina. Its members were from the counties of Surry, Gaston, Catawba, Stanley, Montgomery, Yadkin, Orange, and Cleveland. The unit moved to New Bern and arrived just as the troops were withdrawing from that fight. Ordered to Virginia in May, 1862, it was assigned to General Branch's and Lane's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. It fought at Hanover Court House and many conflicts of the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor. The 28th was then involved in the long Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox operations. It came to Virginia with 1,199 men, lost thirty-three percent of the 480 engaged during the Seven Days' Battles, and had 3 killed and 26 wounded at Cedar Mountain and 5 killed and 45 wounded at Second Manassas. The regiment reported 65 casualties at Fredericksburg and 89 at Chancellorsville. Of the 346 in action at Gettysburg, more than forty percent were killed, wounded, or missing. In Appomattox, the unit surrendered 17 officers and 213 men.

Moses was born in Candor, Montgomery Co. NC 27 Aug 1845. He enlisted at Raleigh, Wake Co NC on 28 Mar 1864 for 3 years inducted by Col Mallett. He has 5 cards in his archival file and shows on a CMR as a POW and paroled at Appomattox Va. on 9 April 1865. He died 26 Feb 1894 in Richmond Co NC. He is the father in law of my 1st cousin 2 x removed.

The roster misspells his first name as Livingston. All public records show it as Linington, including the 1850 census.

My maternal great-great-grandfather. Enlisted at Troy, NC on August 1, 1861 at age 31. Supposed to have been discharged June 28, 1863, but went on to Gettysburg where he was captured July 3, 1863. Remained a POW until his death on December 27, 1863. Buried in Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery, Point Lookout State Park, St. Mary's County, MD.

Matthew enlisted at age 20 on 1 Aug 1861 at Troy, Montgomery Co. NC for 1 year, enlisted by W F Barringer. He has 21 CMR's in his archival file. He was elected Corporal at time of enlistment. Company E was named [ Montgomery Grays. He later enlisted for 2 more years. His first view of the elephant was at New Bern NC 14 March 1862 and his last was when his regiment was scattered at the battle of 5 forks. His unit surrendered at Appomattox with 11 officers and 95 men. God rest his soul as he did his best to repel the illegal invasion. He is the father in law of my 2nd cousin 2 x removed.

John was about 26 years old when he was enlisted by Capt Barringer at Kinston, NC on 10 April 1862. Hard fighting and hard living in the field took its toll on his already chronic Rheumatism. He was discharged as physically disabled on 13 May 1863. He was paid $5.50 cents and made his way home. He became a physician and died 14 Feb 1914.He was the husband of my 4th cousin 4 times removed Sarah L Bostic of Montgomery County NC.

Richard Louis Cates is my Greatgrandfather. He was captured at Fllling Waters, Maryland on July l4,1863 and sent to Point Lookout.

Enlisted September 2, 1861. Served until captured at Spotsylvania Court House, May 12, 1864. Sent to prison camp at Point Lookout in Maryland. Later he was transferred to Elmira Prison Camp in New York. Paroled February 20, 1865.

Lived and buried in Blacksburg SC. Born May 12 1845, Died June 26 1933.

Private Noah Cline, Company H, was wounded at Fussell's Mill on August 16, 1864 while in a skirmish line. His left leg was amputated above the knee and he later died at Winder Hospital in Richmond on October 12, 1864.

Shot in the chest at Fredricksburg. A piece of Hard Tac stopped the bullet. Quoted in Lee's Lieutenants as saying 'a biscuit saved my life'.

William was Simpson J. Nash (also with the 28th Co. K) Brother-in-Law. Wounded & Captured Gettysburg Adams Co. PA. July 3, 1863. Hospitalized: Letterman General Hospital, Gettysburg, moved to U.S. General Military Hospital, West's Buildings, Baltimore,MD,then moved to Point Lookout Military Prison, ST. Mary's Co. MD. Paroled and Exchanged to City Point (now Hopewell), VA March 20, 1864 Retired from active service Dec. 24, 1864. He was severely wounded in his side affecting his lungs and liver, and a skull wound. He is also brother-in-law to William A.C. Kirk of the 52nd Reg. Co. I.

Eli was born in Stanley County NC in 1838 and died in 1933. He enlisted at Ablemarle NC on 7 Sept 1861 as 3rd Sgt Co K 28th Regiment NC Infantry. He was in several major engagements and was shot in the left leg at Richmond. His leg was removed below the knee at Chimborazo Hospital #1 at Richmond. He was discharged as disabled on 1 Aug 1862. We are related by marriage to a distant cousin.

My GGG Grandfather- enlisted in early 1862- served through until Spotsylvania, captured, no further military records after his capture, returned home after the war. Would like to discuss with any relatives!

George G. Nash was the cousin to George E. Nash.(Reg. 52nd Company I)and Adam Kirk (of the 4th Cav. Co. A.) and William A. Kirk (of the 28th Co. K) George G. was the one in the 28th Reg. Company K. Along with other relitives. Missing in action, reported taken prisoner July 3. 1963, 'Supposed to have been killed'.

Parham was brother to William A. Kirk of the 28th Co. K and Brother to George Edward Kirk of the 52 Reg. Co. I.

William A. Kirk was cousin to George G. Kirk of the (28th Co K )and Brother to George E Kirk of the (52nd Reg Co. I.) and Adam Kirk of the ( 4th Cav. Co. A.) and Parham S. Kirk of the (28th Reg. Co. K.) He made it through the war and was Paroled at Appomattox Court House, Appomattox Co. VA April 9, 1865

Took part under Stonewall at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Pickets Charge. Under Lee at Mine Run, Spotsylvania Courthouse and Petersburg. He was captured at Richmond while at the hospital by a New York Calvery.

Simpson J. Nash was wounded and captured at Gettesburg.

Henry was born July 1829 in Stanley Co. NC. He was 32 when he enlisted 7 Sept 1861 at Albemarle, Stanley Co. NC for one year. He has 19 cards in his archival file. He was seriously wounded at Harper's Ferry and was disabled for some time. Rejoined his unit and was captured at Petersburg Va 1 April 1865 as the Confederacy was collapsing. Taken to City Point arriving 4 April 1865. He is released 19 June 1865 after swallowing the yellow dog. Remarks on his paperwork indicates he has problem with his left eye. He died 1 March 1915. He was the father in law of my 4th cousin 3x removed.

Immediately after organizing, the regiment was ordered to Wilmington, NC, where it remained under Brig. Gen. Joseph R. Anderson (VA), commanding the "Cape Fear District," until the fall of New Bern. During its stay in that kind and hospitable town it performed post duty and guarded various bridges on the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad. Evan A Stoker died from "disease" on 29 DEC 1861 in Wilmington, before any battles or skirmishes. His remains were sent home to Stanly county. He is believed to have been buried in the Richard Stoker family cemetery in New London.
