26th North Carolina Infantry

My maternal grandfather, Carl Council Bare, ran away from home. Jefferson, North Carolina, on Easter Sunday, 1928, after hiding his suitcase in the trees, and making a deal with a local taxi driver to take him down the road out of town. Carl then hitch-hiked across Tennessee stopping to work for a time at the Dupont Rayon Factory in Nashville, and then continued his travels West, using his thumb for transportation, across Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas. In April of 1930, he arrived in Tribune, KS, found work at the Kuttler Cattle Ranch and married Annabelle Foley. Their firstborn was my mother.

I have a copy of Aaron's paroled record. He was captured in Wilderness, Va. May 6,1864. He was paroled May 13, 1864 from Elmira, N.Y. He was from Wilkes Co. North Carolina.

GUS REICH WAS A MEMBER OF THE REGIMENT'S BRASS BAND WHICH CAME FROM SALEM, N.C. HE WAS WELL KNOWN FOR A MAGICAL ACT HE DID BOTH DURING AND AFTER THE WAR AND WAS CALLED 'THE WIZZARD OF THE BLUE RIDGE'.

Joseph R. Baldwin was born 20 Aug 1831 in the Whitetop Community of Grayson County, Virginia. He was the son of William D. Baldwin & Margaret Stringer. He married Marilda Jones in 1851 in Grayson County, Virginia. Lived in Ashe County near the Lansing community prior to the war. Joseph enlisted in Company A, 26th NC Infantry Regiment (aka Jeff Davis Mountaineers) on 9 October 1862 at Camp French. Wounded in left thigh and taken prisoner at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863, hospitalized at Chambersburg, PA where left leg was amputated due to wounds. Paroled at Baltimore, MD 12 Nov 1863, transferred to City Point, VA for exchange 17 Nov 1863. Retired from service betwenn July-October 1864. After the civil war, Joseph R. Baldwin returned to Ashe County and became a Baptist minister and farmer. He died on 13 Feb 1909 and is buried in the Baldwin Cemetery in Lansing, Ashe County, NC. Obiturary states 'He professed and claimed a hope in Christ...and joined the Primitive Baptist Church at Big Helton. He was ordained to preach the gospel on our Lord Jesus Christ'. His grave is marked by a VA confederate headstone. Joseph was my 3rd great grandfather through his daughter Melvina Baldwin.

Jesse Bare was born 17 October 1844 in Ashe County, NC. He was the youngest son of Hugh Bare & Mary Polly Koontz. Jesse enlisted in Company A, 26th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 15 May 1863 at the age of 18. He was captured on 18 Sept 1864 at the Battle of Aitkens Landing in Virginia. He was released from prison upon oath of Allegiance in October 1864. Jesse Bare died on 16 Oct 1929 in Ashe County, NC. He was the brother of my 3rd great grandfather Jacob Bare (see Co A, 34th NC Infantry Regiment).

Rudolph Bare was born 29 Oct 1837 in Ashe County, NC. He was the son of Hugh Bare & Polly Koontz. He enlisted in Company A, 26th Infantry Regiment on 17 May 1861. Rudolph Bare died on 30 March 1919 in Ashe County, NC. He was the brother of my 3rd great grandfather Jacob Bare.

Levi is my husbands grandfather 3 times removed. He enlisted 15 March 1863 and was killed in 1864. He went to Camp French, NC.

Eli Bower was born in 1842 in Ashe County, NC., the son of John Bower & Sarah Poe. Enlisted as a private in Company A, 26th NC infantry 'Jeff Davis Mountaineers' on 17 May 1861 at the age of 18. Contracted walking pneumonia and was sent home. Died of disease on 15 May 1862 at his parent's home in Ashe County. He is buried at the Bower family cemetery on land which is now the Jefferson Landing Golf Course in Ashe County, NC. He was the brother of my 3rd great grandfather Francis Marion Bower.

George Bower was born 8 Jul 1845 in Ashe County NC, son of John Bower & Sarah Poe. He is the brother of my 3rd great grandfather Marion Bower. Enlisted in Co. A, 26th NC infantry (Jeff Davis Mountaineers) as a Private on 17 May 1861 at the age of 15. Married Ellen Calloway on 7 Apr 1871 in Ashe County. George Bower died on 17 Feb 1903 in Ashe County, North Carolina. He is buried with his parents in the Bower Family Cemetery on the property that is now the Jefferson Landing Golf Course.

Enlisted March 1 1863, Wounded and captured at Gettysburg July 3 1863 transferred to Davids Isl NY Harobr July17-24 paroled and sent to city point Va received for exchange 9-16-1963. Reported absent on parole. AWOL

Ambrose is my great, great, grandfather on my mothers side. I was fortunate enough to know his granddaughter Sue Greene who was married to Leigh Greene. She told me many stories of her grandfather Ambrose after he came home from the war. I have found many records of Ambrose including hospital records. He was wounded on the first day of Gettysburg and promoted to Captain the next day as many of the men of the 26th NC were disabled or killed at the first day of Gettysburg. I would love to have a photo of him in uniform so if anyone knows of pictures of the 26th NC I wish you would email me.

George W. Little was born about 1838 in Ashe County, NC. Son of Isaac Little & Elizabeth J. Poe. Enlisted as a Private in Co.A, 26th NC Infantry on 17 May 1861 at the age of 22. Taken prisoner at Petersburg, VA 27 Oct 1864. Sent to Point Lookout, MD and transferred to Boulware's Wharf, James River, VA for exchange 30 Mar 1865. Married Louisa Bowers, date of death unknown, buried in Ashe Co. Cem. P02. George Little was the brother of my 3rd great grandmother Lucinda Little Bare.

Enlisted as a Musician on 17 May 1861 at the age of 19. Promoted to Full Drummer on 1 Sep 1861. Looking for any additional information. I believe Harrison was actually 15 years old at the time of enlistment. His daughter Cynthia was the 2nd wife of my great great grandfather William Hardin Parsons of Ashe County, NC. Harrison Miller died prior to 1900, burial location unknown.

2LT Jesse Alexander. Reeves enlisted at age 46. Son of Pheby Osborne Reeves, daughter of Captain Enoch Osborne - 1745 to 1818. Captain Enoch Osborne is a brother of Ephraim Washington Osborne Jr my 4th Great Grandfather.

Died of disease on 15 Mar 1862 in New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. Burial location unknown. My 4th great uncle thru his sister Nelly Richardson. He was named after his grandfather.

William was born in Cabarrus Co. NC in 1828. He enlisted at Monroe, NC on 14 Feb 1862 enlisted by Lieut. Richardson for the war. He was about 35 years old. His Regiment was heavily engaged at Gettysburg where he was captured on the 5th of July 1863. Sent to Fort Delaware and on to Point Lookout Md. where he died in that hell hole of chronic diarhorea at the POW prison Hammond USA Hosp on 2 Jan 1864

John Stewart McCain enlisted in the Jackson Guards, Co B, 26th NC Infantry on 5 June 1861. He was wounded in July 1863 at Gettysburg and,again on 30 October in the area on Richmond, VA. He received a third wound at Charlottesville on 10 May 1864. John Stewart McCain was captured at the seige of Petersburg and interned at Pt. Lookout, MD for the duration of the war. After the war he returned home to Waxhaw, NC, married his sweetheart, and spent the rest of his life farming. He died 11 Nov 1913 and is buried at Tirzah Presbyterian Church in Union Co., NC..

Enlisted on 12/4/1861 at Camp Vance, NC as a Private. On 12/4/1861 he mustered into 'B' Co. NC 26th Infantry He was Killed on 3/14/1862 at New Berne, NC In March of 1863, Thomas McRory, present with Co. B, 26th Regiment, under the command of General Pettigrew, marched from Goldsboro, NC to the enemy's works at Barrington's Ferry, near New Bern, NC. Gen. Pettigrew began his bombardment on Ft. Anderson on the 14th but due to defective ammunition was forced to withdraw. Although the skirmish lasted but a short while, the official records confirm the sad tale; on Mar. 14, 1863, age 19, died from wounds received at the battle of New Bern, NC.

Hampton was 23 years old when he joined on 5 June 1861 at Monroe NC. His unit was in Pettigrews Brigade on 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg. He was wounded by a minnie ball to right leg. It was amputated below the knee. He was captured and sent to Davids Island in New York Harbor.Then to Fort Wood on Bledsoe's Island and Christmas Eve 1863 to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland. He was exchanged. He never recovered and died of his wounds on 12 Feb. 1866. Another life cut short due to northern greed and need for power.

Enlisted as a Private on 5 June 1861 at the age of 22. Promoted to Full Sergeant (Estimated day of Promo) on 30 November 1862. Wounded in the right leg at Gettysburg, PA. Lower third of leg amputated. Received a disability discharge on 1 January 1865.

Private Jackson Baker is my great-great-grandfather. Information from relatives is sketchy. The story most prevalent is that Jackson Baker fought with the 26th at South Mountain in the prelude to Antietam. He was wounded at South Mountain and taken prisoner by the Army of the Potomac.

As I was conducting research into my family history while recovering from wounds I recieved in Iraq, I came across my Great-Great Grandfather who had enlisted in the CSA at the age of 20. He enlisted as a sergeant at Cartersville on 28 May 1861 and reduced in rank to Private 30 May 1862 and re-enlisted 15 NOV 1863 in A Co, 2nd BN NC local Defense regiment.

Joined the 26NCT May, 1861; wounded and taken POW at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863; exchanged August 1863.

Enlisted as Sam Blaylock March 20/62 at age 20 in Caldwell County, she was wounded in the shoulder and was forced to disclose the fact she was a woman. 'This lady dressed in men's clothes Volunteered recieved bounty and for two weeks did all the duties of a soldier vefore she was found out, but her husband being discharged, she disclosed the fact, returned the bounty, and was immedantly discharged April 20/62.

William McKesson (Keith) Blaylock enlisted in Caldwell County, NC at the age of 24, March 20/62. He was discharged on April 20/62 because of a 'hernia' and 'Poison from sumac'. His wife Sarah Malinda Pritchard Blaylock also served in Co F of the 26th NCST untill she exposed herself to then COL Zeb Vance later Gov. of North Carolina

Thomas Jefferson Cozort (aka Cozart) was named for President Thomas Jefferson because both had the same birthday, July 4. President Jefferson died on July 4, 1826. Thomas Jefferson Cozart died on July 3rd, 1863, the day before his 22nd birthday. On that day he volunteered to carry the flag of the ill-fated 26th NC during the infamous Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. He was cut down about 10-20 feet from 'The Angle.' In one of the Yankee units facing him near The Angle was a Cozart; in another Union unit backing up the troops on the line was yet another Cozart. Sitting out the War in Gettysburg was another cousin, Jefferson Thomas Cassat(t), who served only one month in a PA unit because of a 'bad back.' He later became a stone mason and fathered at least 6 children. 'What did YOU do in the war, Daddy?' Thomas J. lost an older brother, John C. Cozart, at the Beaver Dam Creek fight of the Seven Days Battles. Beaver Dam Creek is aka Mechanicsville. John may have been killed less than a month after enlistment; he died 6/26/1862. Interestingly -- and tragically -- Thomas J.'s outfit the 26th lost over 90% of its 803 men at Gettysburg; John's 38th NC Infantry was also in Pickett's Charge and had about 90% casualties. Thomas' Company F had 100% casualties. Both units were involved in the (in)famous 'High Water Mark' of the Gettysburg debacle: the place where the Confederates actually breached Union lines during Pickett's madness.

Enlisted as private on 3-20-1862. Died of hepatitus on 9-6-1862 in Petersburg VA hospital.

Benjamin Hines born in virginia was married and living with his wife Adeline Gragg Hines on Johns River,Caldwell county NC when he joined the CSA army August 15,1861 at the age of 27. He mustered into Co. F,26th NC infantry. Became disabled and was discharged on December 16, 1861. March 7th,1862 he enlisted again and was assigned to Co.B NC 1st Infantry.(not the famous Bethel Regiment) He was detailed to work as a nurse in a Richmond hospital. Was out sick again for awhile. Returnd to duty and detailed out again. Not sure where.Pension papers filed by Adeline show he served with NC 7th Cavalry,Co B. Possibly he was detailed out to that unit.Benjamin was surrenderd at Appomattox courthouse, April,9,1865.Benjamin move to and lived in present day Avery county NC for the remainder of his life. His burial location is not known.

J.T.C. Hood was an orderly sergeant (1st Sergeant) of Co. F 26th Regiment. Company name was the Hibriten Guards, also known as the Hibriten Boys. (His brother Gaston was corporal of Co. A, 22nd Regiment, 1st Regiment to leave Lenoir, N.C.) A family history, given to my aunt Joan, shows J.T.C. Hood enlisted at age 24. He was wounded in the foot and thigh and captured at or near Gettysburg, PA, July 1 - 5, 1863. Hospitalized at Gettysburg until transferred to Davids Island, NY, Harbor, 7/17-24/1863. Paroled at David's Island and transferred to City Point, Virginia, where he was received Sept. 8, 1863, for exchange (he was a war prisoner). Returned to duty on or about July 1, 1864. Reported absent wounded from September - October, 1864, through December 1864. Place and date wounded not reported. Returned to duty in Jan. Feb. 1865. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomatox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865. (portions of text are from 'North Carolina Troops (1861 - 1865) A Roster'). I have a copy of the article entitled 'Unparalleled Loss' with the bi-line 'Company F, Twenty-Sixth Regiment N.C.T., at Gettysburg 1 July, 1863 written by Captain R. M. Tuttle.  Also, there were 4 newspaper articles in the Lenoir, NC paper in May 1996 by John O. Hawkins discussing J.T.C. Hood's first-person account of Gettysburg. It says he was from Collettsville, NC. J.T.C. Hood is quoted in quite a few Civil War books for saying that 'they mowed us down like wheat before the sickle.' His full name was James Theodore Carroll Hood. His name in some Civil War records is shown as John T. C. Hood. But he is most often listed as J.T.C. Hood. He was married to Elizabeth Chambers. They lived in Caldwell County, N.C. They had 12 children, 7 of which died before reaching adulthood. He is my 2nd great grandfather through his son , Oscar Hood.

Private Evander 'Mack' Prestwood was a member of Company F, 26th Infantry, NC. He was born in June 16th, 1821 in Lenoir/Caldwell County,NC, and died from meningitis June 11th, 1865 in the POW camp, Hart's Island, NY. He was married to Caroline Clonse, and was the son of William T. Prestwood and Celia Clark. He is buried at Cypress Hills National Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY, Section 1, #2994. He was my great-great grandfather. His headstone has only E. Prestwood, also some records have his name listed as 'Ervand', but his full name was Evander McIver Prestwood, but friends called him 'Mack'.

Logan was my great great grandfather, my great grandfather was Jackson Lee Taegue. Logan was wounded at Bristo Station VA 10-14-1863,he served in the 26th reg CSA the rest of the war.Logan is buried with his wife Frany in Sulavan Co TN in Bluff City in the vMottern Family Cemetary, I am a proud member of the SONS OF THE CONFEDERATE VETERANS.

Underdown, John resided in Caldwell County, NC prior to the war. He enlisted on 7-15-1861. Present and accounted for until wounded in the thigh and captured at Gettysburg between July 1-5, 1863. Hospitalized at Gettysburg until transferred to Fort Delaware between July 7-12, 1863. Transferred to Point Lookout, MD between October 15-18, 1863. Died at Point Lookout, MD of chronic diarrhoea on 4-19-1864. He is buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Point Lookout, MD

Underdown, William resided in Caldwell County, NC prior to the war. He enlisted on 3-20-1862 at the age of 17. Present and accounted for until wounded in the breast at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. Died from his wounds on July 3, 1863. Burial location is unknown.

My GG Grandfather

Absalom was 31 years old when he enlisted as Pvt in Co H 26th NC Infantry in Moore Co. NC. Wounded in the left breast on 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg. [ His gravestone has the following inscription] * One of the few NC Troops that crossed the stone fence of the yankee position in Pickett's charge. He was captured and taken to Davids Island in MY Harbor. Transferred to City Point and exchanged 8 Sept 1863. He was placed on detached duty and assigned to the Invalid Corps on 23 July 1864. He was the father in law of my 5th cousin 3 x removed.

Captain William Martin was from Moore County N.C. and was elected to be the first Capt. of Co. H, William was killed as he stood near the center of the Regiment at the Battle of New Bern in 1862. William was my Great-Great Grandfather, i am a member of the Maj. Gen. Isaac Ridgeway Trimble Camp # 1836 Sons Of Confederate Veterans Maryland Division and the 22nd North Carolina Inf. Co. A reenacting unit

Capt. Martin was commander of Co. H, 'Moore Independents' of Moore County, N.C., which became part of the 26th N.C. Regt. Vol. Inf. He is buried at the Cypress Presbyterian Church Cemetery, between Cameron and Vass on Cypress Church Rd. The church was establsihed in 1823. The information was noted by Fay Sadler of USGenWeb, I came across it while doing reserach on the battle of New Bern. GR

John was from Moore Co NC. He was 20 years old when he enlisted at Carthage, NC on6 Jun 1861. His unit after training was sent to Virginia. It was know as one of the best trained and equipped in the Confederacy. They were engaged almost immediately. John was shot in the groin on 8 Sept 1863 and given a 40 day furlough after spending some time in hosp, recovering. He rejoined his company and was wounded again at Gettysburg. He was take as POW on the 4th of July at Amelia Court House Va and sent to DeCamp hospital on David's Island in NY Harbor. He was sent to Point Lookout and was released on 29 June 1865 after [Swallowing the Yellow Dog] His home was listed as Moore Co. NC and described as having Blue eyes, light complexion, Brown hair and 5 foot 9 inches tall.

Christopher enlisted at Carthage,NC on 3 June 1861. Mustered into Confederate Service 31 Ag 1861. He was captured at Bristow Station 14 Oct 1863 and was POW at Old Capitol Prison in Washington DC. Benjamin W. Marley enlisted in Company I, 26th Regt, NC on Sept. 23, 1862 at the age of 35. He was wounded at Gettysburg, Pa. on July 1, 1863. He was a Private. Roll-exct 0024, Roll-Rec 00004259. The North Carolina Standard newspaper dated July 29, 1863 had a list of men killed and wounded at Gettysburg which included B. W. Marley. He was mustered out on April 9, 1865 at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. He fought under Colonels J.R. Vance and H.K. Burgwyn who were both killed in the battle of Gettysburg. His first Colonel Z.B. Vance was elected as Governor of North Carolina in August 1862. Benjamin walked back home to Ferguson, NC from Virginia (215 miles) when the Civil War was over.

Son of Jonathan Parleir & Rebecca Shinn Born 1830 in Wilkes County, NC Died January 23, 1869 in Wilkes County, NC Family history tells that he was a schoolteacher on Walnut Grove Mountain in Wilkes County prior to the war. U.S. Civil War- enisted as private on Sept. 23, 1862 at the age of 32. Served in Company I, 26th Infantry Regiment of NC Confederate Army. Wounded in combat at Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA, hospitalized on 5/16/1864 in Richmond VA. Returned to duty 7/30/1864. Shot in the hand near Petersburg, VA about January 1865. Recognized for distinguished service. He is buried in the Parleir Family Cemetery off Brocktown Road near Moravian Falls in Wilkes County, NC. My 4th great grandfather through his daughter Mary Parlier Moore.

William C (Billy) Boylin enlisted in Company K of the 26 Reg NC Troops at the age of 16 on July 1, 1861. He was killed on July 1, 1863 in Gettysburg Pa. His father was John Boyin and his mother was Harriet J. Paul Boylin. A Confederate Memorial marker was placed in Eastview Cemetary, Wadesboro NC next to his sister, Laura, on May 31, 2010.

Julius was 34 years old when he enlisted at Wadesboro, Anson Co NC. for the war. He has 12 CMR's in his archival file. He died 12 July 1908. CMR for May-June 1864 he is wounded and in the Hospital in Va. On 5 Dec 1864 he is transferred to the Cavalry. He is the husband of my cousin Frances Elvin Thomas b.30 May 1833.

He has 6 cards in his archival file. Attached to Pettigrew's Brigade, General A.P. Hill's 3rd Corps army of Northern Virginia. Fought at Seven Days Battle, Gettysburg, Bristo Station, The Wilderness. He died 24 May 1909 and is buried in the Morven Cem. Morven, Anson Co. NC. Most of the men in his family also resisted the invaders. He was the father in law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.

William was born in Anson Co. NC 3 Jan 1844. He enlisted at Wadesboro 1 July 1861 and mustered 26 Aug 1861 by J.C. Caraway. He has 20 cards in his archival file. His first year was spent near New Bern, NC guarding the coast. Sent north he fought in the Seven Days Battle. Sent back to NC and then back to Va. where the 26th was placed in Pettigrew's Brigade, 3rd Corps under Gen. A.P. Hill. He was in the fight at Gettysburg 1st 2nd and 3rd, involved in Pickett's Charge he became separated from his unit and was captured on the 5th of July. Sent to Fort Delaware then to Point Lookout. He was exchanged at Bulware's Warf near Richmond 20 Feb 1865. He died 18 April 1929 at Deep Creek, Wadesboro, Anson Co. NC. He was the husband of my 5th cousin 2 x removed.

Robert was born in Anson County in 1835. He has 14 items in his archival file. He enlisted at Wadesboro NC 1 July 1861. He saw action at New Bern, NC as his regiment was defending the NC coast. Moved to Virginia where he fought in the Seven Days battles on the Peninsular. Engaged at Gettysburg at McPherson's Ridge where he was wounded, suffering a gunshot to his left leg on 1 July 1863. The leg was amputated below the knee. Operation at General Hospital at Staunton, Va. He was retired on 5 Oct 1864 and sent to Raleigh on 14 Nov. After he recovered he was assigned to the Invalid Corps under Lt. Gen. T.H. Holmes at Raleigh, NC.

George Washington Harrington was born 10 June 1840 and enlisted on 5 Oct 1862 in Anson County, NC. He served in the 26th Infantry Regiment. He died in 1913 and is intered in Weakly County, TN.

Enlisted at the age of 34 into Co. K, 26th N.C. Infantry in Anson Co. on July 1, 1861 as a Sargent. Promoted to 3rd Lt. Apr. 23, 1862. In command of his company at Gettysburg on 7/3/1863. Promoted to 2nd Lt. Aug. 9, 1863. KIA at Burgess Mill, Va. Oct. 27, 1864.

John W. Hyatt was born on April 9, 1845 and enlisted in Company K, 26 Reg NC Troops on May 1, 1863. He was killed at Gettysburg PA on July 1, 1863. His father was David Hyatt and his mother was Louisa Hargrave Hyatt. A Confederate Memorial stone was placed in the family plot in the Concord Methodist Church Cemetary, Anson County NC on May 31, 2010

My gg uncle William J. Leard (1827-1897) served the Confederate States of America in the War of Northern Aggression enlisting on 10 May 1862. He was wounded in the leg at Gettysburg 1863 and captured. He was hospitalized at Gettsyburg and later in September 1863 was exchanged for another prisoner. He was back on Confederate duty in November 1864, but was captured again at Petersberg, Virginia, and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. He took the Oath of Allegiance on 24 June 1865 and released. After the war William returned home to Anson County, North Carolina, and served on the Board of County Commissioners and was chairman 1868-1869. He married Angeline Reese Phillips.

Daniel died of the injuries he received at Gettysburg in 11/1864. I managed to find an excerpt in a book that printed a letter he wrote his parents right before he died in a hospital in Florence S. Carolina. I contacted the author who said there was an article with 27 of his letters printed with a picture. Can't wait to get them! He died a lonely death begging his parents to come see him. I am trying to find who has the original letters and the letter from the hospital informing his parents about his last moments. He is my uncle.

Joseph 'Jack' Gaston died in Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. He was a 1st cousin of Daniel Sneed Liles and had 2 brothers who also fought in the Civil War - Charles Manly Liles and William Alexander Liles both of NC 14th infantry. He is a cousin 5x removed. I would like to know more about him.

Calvin enlisted 10 May 1862 along with his brother James Wilson. He was a 27 year old from Anson County NC. He mustered in at Camp Johnson on 19 June 1862. He was in the fight at Gettysburg and was severely wounded. Captured 5 July and was sent to Fort Deleware , Del. and transferred to Point Lookout. on 18 Oct. 1863. He was paroled and exchanged. He recovered and rejoined his unit. He was paroled at Appomattox 9 April 1865.

Green was from Union Co. NC he was 21 when he joined 1 July 1861 at Wadesboro NC. Mustered in 31 August 1861. He died at Gettysburg Pa. on 1 July 1863. His mother Winny filed for settlement on17 Dec. 1864. There is a memory CSA stone for him at the Austin Family Cemetery, Watson, Union County NC.

James enlisted 10 May 1862 at Wadesboro, Anson Couty NC. Mustered in at Camp Johnson 19 June 1862 for 3 years or the war. He fought at Gettysburg and was captured on Lee's retreat thru Maryland. Captured at Falling Waters Md. on 14 July 1863. Sent to Baltimore and on to Point Lookout Md. 20 August 1863 for exchange. Exchanged on 17 March 1864. James rejoind the fight and was surrenered with his unit on 9 April 1865 at Appomattox Va.

Listed in Eastview Cemetery with wife Flora. Enlisted as a Corporal on July 1, 1861 at the age of 21. Wounded on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. Returned on December 15, 1863. Promoted to Full Sergeant on 15 December 1863. Wounded on 25 August 1864 at Reams' Station, VA. Returned on 15 October 1864. Paroled on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA.
